These gardens, on what was once an man-made island which is still known to locals four centuries on as the New Ground, were once the pride of the town. Although the seasonal planting, much of it the hard work of volunteers, can still impress visitors, the District Council has been so neglecting the area badly in recent years that they are a sorry shadow of their past glory.
