The Medieval Merchant's House in Southampton is a fascinating step back in time! This well-preserved 14th-century building offers a unique glimpse into medieval life. As soon as you enter, you can feel the history in the air—it's like being transported back to the Middle Ages. The house is small, but every room is packed with interesting details, from the wooden beams to the authentic furniture and artifacts. The informative displays and knowledgeable staff help bring the history of the house and its original merchant owner to life. It’s a great place to learn about Southampton’s rich history and the role of merchants in medieval society. I particularly enjoyed the fact that it’s not overly commercialized; it feels like a genuine historic site rather than a tourist attraction. If you appreciate history, architecture, or just enjoy exploring unique places, the Medieval Merchant's House is a must-visit. A true hidden gem in Southampton!

A total waste of 10 minutes. Spent most of my time in the toilet provided just outside the building. I certainly wouldn't pay £5 to enter. No information about the building, nothing to read, just a simple quick browse around the few rooms the building offers and that is it. I honestly don't know how English Heritage can charge for this historic building, it looks neglected and you're better off spending an extra pound to visit the Tudor House and Garden which is located in the next street along as that is a lot better value and worth your time. Avoid the Medieval Merchant House if you have any sense.

Currently closed. Reopens in spring 2024. Built on one of the busiest streets in medieval Southampton, beneath the medieval town wall that once defended Southampton against seaborne attack, the Merchant’s House served as a residence and place of business. Now restored to its mid-14th century appearance, it is equipped with replica period furnishings.

It's like taking a step back in time, this place is so well preserved. Very unusual, never seen anything like it before. It's simple but had an elegant beauty, you can feel the history oozing through. Incredible it survived 700 years! The staff member was really helpful and friendly and gave us lots of interesting information.

The Medieval Merchant's House in Southampton is a well-preserved example of a 14th-century townhouse. Located on French Street, it was built around 1290 by John Fortin, a prosperous wine merchant. The house exemplifies the typical architecture of its period, featuring timber framing and a jettied upper floor. Ticket £8.5

If you are not an english heritage member then it's not worth the money. The house can be visited and finished in less than 15 minutes with minimal information. You can get more info online than at the site. But the architecture is very nice so if you are in the area and have the cash to spare then you should visit.
