I haven't visited here in a few years, but you can officially visit it now, and it was free last time I visited. Run by a wonderful team of volunteers who want to protect the history for the local area - great local attraction and there's plenty to see, with great views across the sea from the towers. I'd advise wearing strong boots and thick trousers as you'll find yourself under the towers in small tunnels with lots of rubble etc so best to be prepared. Unfortunately, this means it isn't suitable for anyone who's unable to walk and balance, but even if you are wheel chair bound you would be able to explore some of the area and still worth a look imo! I am really glad it's being rejuvenated

Beacon Hill Battery was open to vandals, graffiti-ists, & arsonists for several decades, consequently the site became an absolute eyesore of a tip. It's a shame because the fortification has enormous local historical significance, having served during BOTH World Wars. Some of the buildings on-site should have been Listed & preserved due to their unique military design. Today what remains is in quite a dilapidated condition, despite all the hard work put in by volunteers to undo the damage done by decades of neglect & trespassing. If visiting be sure to check out the exterior enforcement of Beacon Hill Fort, stretching all around the sea wall feature known as The Point. You can actually look inside the pillbox apertures facing onto the North Sea from here! Also to be seen on the Harwich side of Beacon Hill Fort, is the neighbouring WW2 RDF Radar Tower. On the pillbox facing onto The Point is a preserved graffiti painting, (but is it a genuine Banksy mural!?)

Great place to visit if you're interested in WW2 history and military history in general. The site has some excellent artefacts and impressive gun platforms (guns are long gone though). The site is run by very knowledgeable and friendly volunteers. They are funded purely by donations. There has been a huge amount of work undertaken to reclaim the site from nature after it was abandoned in 1956. 45mins - 2hrs depending on how much you read. Free parking and free admission.

So glad we visited today. Such an interesting place. Loved the fact you could look around and in all the buildings. Free admission, although worth tipping to support the upkeep. Very friendly helpful people that greet you on arrival. The tower is great to climb up and gives you a great view. Very interesting to see and hold some of the guns that have been donated. Thank you so much for a great day. P.s Thank you for the pub tip😃 The Guinness was really good😃

Well worth a visit, loads of military history from 19th century onwards. Plenty of interesting old fortified structures to look at and to view from and small museum style exhibits. Local friendly volunteers on hand to provide info, free entry but donations appreciated.

Beacon hill fort at Harwich. We parked on the seafront and walked up to visit the fort. It was free to enter, donations requested. It’s ran by volunteers. Very knowledgable. Great place to visit to see the history from WW2 for Harwich.
