You are allowed to go into the mouth of the tunnel, admittedly not very far, but does this really matter? Yes it might be fun to go a hundred metres under the earth, but the overall safety of visitors and the longevity of the site must be considered. Subsidence, risk of tunnel collapse and a buildup of gas quite rightly sees the tour going no further than just inside the mouth of the tunnel. The deliver of the tour, however, more than makes up for this.
Do check the Ironbridge website for information about visiting the Tar Tunnel, as tours are seasonal and it's not possible to visit without being booked onto one. Enquire at the Coalport...
