A beautiful, calm, and highly interesting venue in the city of Worcester near Worcester Foregate Street train station. Accessible via steps at the front or a lift situated in the adjacent side street. On entering, you're greeted by a friendly staff member looking after the small shop selling high-quality gifts, toys, and jewellery, all with a local historical angle. The building itself is a historical masterpiece in brickwork, marble, and stone masonry, all adorned with works of art and sculptures. A beautiful sweeping staircase leads to the first floor where there is a small but friendly cafe, where they serve in my view the best tea in Worcester. A variety of cakes (including gf and vegan option) snacks and light meals are also available at a modest price served by friendly staff. This is a great cafe if you want some peace to do some laptop work, read or just relax away from the noise of the city outside. It's quite compact, but there is space for wheelchairs or pushchair. The remainder of the space on this floor is dedicated to a combination of fixed and interchangeable exhibitions. The very spacious and clean toilets, plus lifts, are also situated on this floor. On my most recent visit on the 25th Oct, the exhibition related to the Worcestershire regiment and all the subsequent wars they were engaged in throughout the centuries but with a focus on the world wars as we approach Remembrance Day. The whole thing was put together in a very interesting and highly visual display. There is also a spacious children's play area. I highly recommend a visit which is suitable for all ages and...
Read moreI’m a bit unsure how to start my review, there were some areas of the museum that I really enjoyed, mostly the taxidermy animals, and the Worcester Pictures, as well as the coin collection that was found in 2019. I was happy to have a look in the first and second rooms, there was also a regiment section, although not of interest in much detail for me, it was very informative and seemed well laid out.
Unfortunately, the Art Gallery appeared closed, which was disappointing for me. I had a look in the giftshop and although there didn’t seem to be a lot of choice, the magnets and bookmarks I found slightly disappointing as they didn’t say Worcester Museum on them, but were of I assume a picture in the Art Gallery which I had not seen.
I will be doing a return visit to see if this was a one off, and hopefully I will try and look at an exhibition next time.
On the upside, free entry, a lovely little café and loved to see Albert the Albatross again.
Haven't been in this building since I did work experience in what would have been the old library.
My trip...
Read moreWe travelled to Worcester City museum especially to see the Canaletto exhibition and it was entirely worth the trip. The museum is not large but is varied, well curated and fascinating. But the portrait gallery and the Canaletto exhibition are wonderful. The information provided with each picture gives insight "with a twist" as it highlights the impact Canaletto, and his art, had on English culture and society. We had a thoroughly wonderful afternoon and the relaxed, friendly staff were the icing on the cake...and speaking of cake the cafe is lovely too. Small, simple and welcoming. Only a small menu but it's always better to do a few things to perfection 😁...curried parsnip soup! a revelation! Also I must mention the complete disabled access, marvellous. Thankyou Worcester...
