The first time I passed this place up because it felt kind of sketchy, but I tried again a few days later and was pleasantly surprised. Make your way down the driveway by the NPS sign to the building behind the house. The little museum is at the end of the driveway. Tom is a gem! I was the only visitor on a Sunday. Tom was very pleasant and knows his Revolutionary War history. He gave me a detailed history of how Abingdon Muster Grounds evolved into the Battle of Kings Mountain and then on into the surrender of Cornwallis to Washington at Yorktown. It was history I did not know and the reason why even these little parks have a significance to the history of our country. Stellar! Thanks, Tom, for the lesson and the stories!

It was closed the day we went there though the internet stated otherwise. We walked the grounds and peered into the dilapidated buildings. I was sad to see that there appears to be very little upkeep. I couldn't help compare it to some of the buildings in Cades Cove, TN. The buildings on the muster grounds also had trash inside them. You would never see that in Cades Cove. I hope the historic areas on the outskirts of Abingdon receive monies to maintain the buildings as it is too much to expect the volunteers to handle restoration work.

A very small visitor center with TONS of information and the most knowledgeable gentleman manning the desk. We always look for a location of historic significance to add to any trip, and this was worth the stop. We spent about an hour looking at the displays. There is a lot of related history in the area, and the stop here helped tie it together.

This free to access, historical gem is accessible for everyone! There's a whole lot packed into the small space along with people with BIG HEARTS who love to share their knowledge. Interactive museum/displays and reenactors ready to fill in all the gaps you have about early American history in the region! Stop and appreciate all the sacrifices that were made BY MANY OTHERS--so you COULD enjoy this country 😉 Pat and Mike were EXCELLENT and EILL WARMLY...
