The first time I passed this place up because it felt kind of sketchy, but I tried again a few days later and was pleasantly surprised. Make your way down the driveway by the NPS sign to the building behind the house. The little museum is at the end of the driveway.
Tom is a gem! I was the only visitor on a Sunday. Tom was very pleasant and knows his Revolutionary War history. He gave me a detailed history of how Abingdon Muster Grounds evolved into the Battle of Kings Mountain and then on into the surrender of Cornwallis to Washington at Yorktown. It was history I did not know and the reason why even these little parks have a significance to the history of our country.

Read moreIt was closed the day we went there though the internet stated otherwise. We walked the grounds and peered into the dilapidated buildings. I was sad to see that there appears to be very little upkeep. I couldn't help compare it to some of the buildings in Cades Cove, TN. The buildings on the muster grounds also had trash inside them. You would never see that in Cades Cove. I hope the historic areas on the outskirts of Abingdon receive monies to maintain the buildings as it is too much to expect the volunteers to handle...
