A very small town. We were on a cruise. It’s best to rent a bike or car from Avis to explore verses an excursion on a cruise ship. The eagle reserves are very close. There are three eagle reserves from 7-20 miles away with no admissions. Biking it makes sense. Bike rental are $49 for two hours and up. It cost 50 percent more for food , basic necessities and health care !
Crime is related to alcohol and bear breaking into cars and homes if the bears are hungry.
Coming from Whitehorse, Canada is 250 miles by car.
A ferry from Juneau cost $44 one way as a passenger. A vehicle would cost more.

Plenty of pamphlets, maps, guides, and literature to review and help plan your day out and about. Also had a helpful staff greeting people and ready to provide recommendations. Our guide was a retired forest ranger and very knowledgeable about the area, the critters, the eagles, and definitely about the forest.
