My family and I have been on path of The Freedom Riders this whole week and stopped in Anniston to visit the sites were young people on buses were attacked and feared for their lives as violent mobs gathered to hurt them. Here in Anniston, AL there are 2 stops because there were 2 buse that entered the town 1 hour behind each other and were both attacked by angry mobs at 2 different locations. The people in this town hated the idea of desegregation and wanted things to stay separate. The Freedom riders risked their lives to make a point to break the rules in the name of peace...

We arrived after the visitor center was closed but were so lucky to run into a man who gave us the NPS brochures and said that he was involved in setting up the National Monuments here and in Birmingham. He told us to listen to the recording of Hank Thomas on the metal post outside, which he recorded. It was very informative and moving to learn about these extremely brave civil rights activists. The mural with informational signs describe the timeline of events in detail. A great short stop to learn about this important moment in...

Visitor center at the site was closed. Signs in the alleyway explained the historical significance of the site. There is a historical marker at the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument site that ties the two locations together. This site is about 60 miles from the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and on the way to Horseshoe Bend and Tuskegee. Also this site is outside so be sure to check the weather before leaving.
