Beautiful!!
Note: Make sure you use the facilities in Onekama. Not a whole lot of choices right now with covid. I also didn't see a gas station.
Please do bring your camera. I saw raven swan and bever.
I wore a mask but others did not. I still felt relatively comfortable with being outside and passing by others on the walkway. No one crowded together or stayed in one spot and there weren't many people out there anyway. That and there are other walkouts off the main dock that you can walk out onto if someone is coming let them go by and then continue on. This wasn't always the case for me but it was helpful at times.
It got kind of windy while I was out there so if the temperatures a bit on the chilly side you may need a jacket.
It's probably a good idea not to get caught out there after the sun goes down. Some areas have railings where others do not. I'd hate for anyone to fall in the water because they couldn't see where they were going. I got in with just enough time to drive through town to the beach area and watch the sun drop out from site.
We plan on bringing my mother in law who's in her 80s out to see it next summer. No way she can walk that far but we figure with a wheelchair and an umbrella to protect her from the sun if needed she's gonna have...
Read moreThis is an absolutely wonderful place to go with my family and take in some nature. Just today we saw muskrat, swans, terns, kingfishers, killdeer, geese, multiple types of duck, fish, and the prettiest red winged blackbird I've ever seen. We saw two muskrat grooming each other. We saw a bird (possibly a tern, but we're not expert bird watchers) dive into the water from the air to catch prey. If this sounds fun, GO. The boardwalk is very well kept. Some of it has guard rails, but the parts that are low to the ground do not, and the open vibe is very immersive. There is a large section that cannot be passed from mid April through mid July to protect critical nesting areas for threatened and endangered birds. Please check this out if it sounds like your jam, it is a hidden jewel...
Read moreBeautiful marsh and an excellent educational opportunity for little kids. There's plenty of flora and fauna to view, and our kids were super excited seeing so many birds, trying to identify them, asking so many questions, and learning some new bird names in the process. Our little one claimed he saw an alligator in there too... well... not really sure about that though :-) The marsh definitely piqued our kids curiosity. We entered the marsh around 6 PM, the weather was so pleasant, so we took our own sweet time strolling through the preserve, and exited the marsh at around 8 PM. A great...
