Review of Goldfield Ghost Town – A Fun Step Back in Time
Goldfield Ghost Town is a fascinating and entertaining stop for anyone interested in Old West history, mining lore, or just a unique roadside attraction. Located near Apache Junction, Arizona, this recreated 1890s mining town offers a mix of free exploration and paid experiences, making it a great place to stretch your legs and soak in some Wild West atmosphere.
What to Expect: Free Exploration: You can wander through the town at no cost, checking out historic buildings, old mining equipment, and staged shootout reenactments (if you time your visit right). The dusty streets and wooden storefronts make for great photo ops. Paid Tours & Attractions: For those who want a deeper dive, there are several paid activities: Mine Tour – A guided walk through an old gold mine to learn about the town’s mining history. Bordello Tour – A peek into the "soiled doves" side of Goldfield’s past (family-friendly but entertaining). Narrow-Gauge Train Ride – A short but fun ride around the perimeter with some historical narration. Gold Panning – You can try your luck (for a fee) and take home whatever flakes you find.
Shopping & Dining: Gift Shops: Most sell classic Old West souvenirs—think cowboy hats, imported trinkets, rocks, and jewelry. There’s also a pottery shop with handmade Southwestern-style pieces. Restaurant: Unfortunately, the on-site eatery was closed during our visit, so I can’t comment on the food, but it’s supposed to serve standard Western fare like burgers and chili.
Final Thoughts: Goldfield Ghost Town isn’t a perfectly preserved historical site—it’s more of a tourist-friendly homage to the Old West. That said, it’s a fun, kitschy stop with enough activities to keep you entertained for an hour or two. If you’re passing through the Superstition Mountains area, it’s definitely worth a visit—especially if you enjoy staged gunfights, mine tours, or hunting for quirky souvenirs.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5 – A fun, family-friendly attraction with a mix of free and paid experiences.)

One thing I did not enjoy was lunch at the Saloon. First of all, it's not air conditioned. They had a few big fans, but only one of them was on. It was probably 85 or so inside so I was hoping for a quick meal and then out. I ordered their 'famous' mammoth burger well done, fries, and iced tea. The drinks came in disposable clear solo cups and took about 30 seconds to drink. It was 30 minutes before I got another and that time, it was 99% ice. When the food came, my burger, which had cheese, onion and mushrooms, looked okay except the cheese was a processed slice plopped on top. It wasn't even a tiny bit melted. I found out why when I took a bite. The burger was stone cold. The flavor was good and I was really hungry so I took another bite, and that's when I discovered that it was not well done. Not even close. I hardly ever eat meat, and I never, ever eat raw meat. There was no help to be seen so I started on the fries, which were really good. Nicely seasoned. I would have been happy with a big plate of those. By the time anyone came by to check on us and I showed my mostly raw, cold food, there was an offer to get another, but it was so hot in the place (ironic since my food was cold), that I didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for a new one. There was no offer of a discount for my inedible food. My friend ordered the chicken tenders, which were very pale. I was surprised they were cooked through, and there were only 3. Ten bucks for 3 little tenders and some fries. So, if you go to the ghost town, eat first. Also, bring money. Entry is free, but if you want to do anything like the mine tour, train ride, or look at the museum, they each have their own ticket price. We didn't do...
Read moreThe goldmine ghost town was cool but obviously the shops were pretty pricey as it is a tourist trap. The mine tour was kind of disappointing. It was cool to see what it would have looked like but our tour guide really rubbed me the wrong way. This occurred April 2/2025 at 2:25 pm. When we went down into the mine, he had instructed the group to stop at the red box. However it was quite dark and a few of the groups went past that area by accident. He had let our group lead itself forward while he went to the back of the line so i’m not surprised that people got confused. In my opinion; he reacted very unprofessionally to this accident. He yelled at everyone to stop and then berated the group for not listening to him. He snapped his fingers at the group like he was scolding a bad dog. He confronted the group about why they didn’t stop where they were supposed to and they looked visibly upset and confused as to why he was so mad. The people who went past it didn’t see the red box. I understand that is a liability issue for people to wander further than they are supposed to, but maybe the tour guide should lead the group to the spot they want to stop at before leaving the front to check on those in the back of the line. The groups clearly didn’t do it on purpose or maliciously we were all just confused and had obviously never been down there before. I think the tour would have been cool otherwise but the tour guide just kind of ruined the vibe and...
