This park is named after the Vandergriff Family. Although not a founding family, they helped shape modern-day Arlington into what it is today.
Vandergriff Park is a sprawling site. The site includes Vandergriff Park, the Bob Duncan Center (for events), and Marrow Bone Spring Park. Inside the area are baseball / softball fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a skatepark, walking / biking trails, a pavilion, picnic areas, large fields for enjoyment, public art, and local history. It’s a diverse area.
While in the park, look for the Vandergriff “V” -- it’s blue and 30 feet tall, so it shouldn't be hard to miss. (It’s between the skatepark and swimming pool if you need a hint.) The giant V used to be at the Vandergriff Chevy Dealership, formerly located at the corner of Collins and Division Streets in present-day downtown. There’s an informative sign near the foot of the V telling a little about the Vandergriffs, but the sign itself could use a facelift.
If you’re into local history, take the short walk to Marrow Bone Spring Park. It’s north of the tennis courts and skatepark, past the bordering residential street of Timberview Lane. There’s a Texas Historical Marker there at Johnson Creek.
While not one of my favorite parks, it’s a nice place and offers a little something...
Read moreI took my 10 year old son here for the first time tonight. We won't be going back. The park itself is nice. Lots of great ramps, transitions, and mix of ramp/bowl vs street. The problem was with the skaters. There was trash everywhere. The trashcan itself was broken. The kids there, a couple in their early 20s, some teenagers, and one kid who was probably 10-11, were incredibly vulgar. The youngest kid had such a foul mouth he cussed nearly every other word (being "cool," I imagine). The other kids weren't quite as bad, but we're roughly the same. Especially with the music they were playing. My son was disgusted by then and wanted to leave. I completely agreed. It was unfortunate that such a great park was ruined this way. Trust me, I was one of those kids once myself. I had zero regard for others, respect for property, or other worthy character attributes. I knew it wouldn't help say anything so the only option is to avoid the park altogether....
Read moreVery nice park havnt been there in awhile. Last night it seemed as all they did was do wheelies in the parking lot and used it for drag racing. Very dangerous I think. And then there was some gathering in the main building and the kids inside had came outside and kept breaking glass bottles until I yelled WTF. I mean where are their parents or even security? It didn't make any since. And to top the night off there, I went to use the womans restroom before I was leaving the park. As I was using the restroom, a man entered and said excuse me is there anyone in here? I told him yes but this was a women's restroom and to get out and he proceeded to jumble about who knows what and was acting like he was going to stay but ofcourse thank God my boyfriend and his friend seen him go in there, and started yelling at him WTH you doing that my girlfriend in there. He looked like he was high....
