Wow! If you want to feel like you've stepped back in time to the prehistoric era then, this is for you. Moderately strenuous for people with bad knees. If you pay attention, then there are all kinds of wildlife and cool plants to see. The hike to the Cathedral tree up and back took us about 1.5 hours. We did run into a few people who wanted to talk and a family that had story time in front of us. That's okay, because there was a really neat bench to sit, talk and wait. Take your mosquito spray, they are vicious and literally, " blood thirsty". The tree is amazing and you get to see some really neat steps and bridges. Read moreAn easy drive in the Astoria area that’s not too far off the beaten path. The hike to the tree is a mere 1/3 mile from the trail head gate and has an ascent of about 195 feet.
There was no signage along the way but the gravel trail eventually comes to a wooden walkway. Take the steps up to the wooden walkway and then turn left when you come to a T. Go down the steps and follow the trail over a few large tree roots to get to the Richard Fenscak Cathedral Tree. There are a couple of wooden benches to take in a full Zen experience.
