This is an interesting park. It is built on the site of a very large textile mill, Whittier Mill and has access to the Chattahoochee River via an easy .25 mile hike thru the woods. Someone has created an extensive mountain bike trail system in the woods along the river and the railroad tracks that runs from the RR bridge all the way to Atlanta Road, so that is another opportunity.
The park is dog friendly, very sunny, and the neighbors are rather unusual and cool departing from the Atlanta-norm of wanna-be, yuppy clones.
The only reservation I hold is that the park is downstream from Cobb and Atlanta's sewage treatment plants, as well as a large coal-fired power plant. Uphill from the park are large petroleum containers that could easily be seeping into the ground water. Furthermore, the jury is out on to what extent the City of Atlanta remediated the soil under the former Whittier Mill, which would have had many sources of toxins that will still be present in the soil.
So.. it is a pretty place, if you don't stop and think about it's relative position to major sources of...
Read moreVery nice park. Well kept in a nice neighborhood. From Bolton Road, take a right on Parrott Ave, right on Whittier Ave and left on Wales Ave. The old mill tower is an interesting brick building and the Pavilion on the Southwest corner is nice too.
If one walks along the North boundary of the field, one can find a trail that leads Northeast into the woods. The trail continues to a wider track which goes East and West. Following it to the East you can eventually cross the RR tracks and follow the trail to the Chattahoochee river. The trails bifurcate often and go in various directions. Keep your head and remember where you turned so as not to lose your way.
The trails look ideal for mountain biking or walking. It's a nice hike and pretty...
Read moreThis park is a great place to explore with kids or pets or even as a setting for professional photography. The playground area has a great location in the shade with a bocce ball court. And the rest of the park has large open spaces around the old mill. There's trails to go walking, including one that goes back to the train tracks if you enjoy train spotting. The only downside that I have found is that there's no public restroom making it a little challenging when you have kids on the playground. Otherwise, it's a bit of a hidden gem in terms of its location...
