I'm going to start off with this. Your mileage may vary! Everyone has different expectations, and everyone experiences things differently. My father has been a subscriber for some time, and he always tells us the show was Meh. Occasionally, he will rave about a production. He always complains about the level of the actors’ voices. Either too quiet, or too loud. So, this season, he invited us along. We hooked him up with an hearing assistance device. He complains a lot about the curtain speech from the artistic director. Heck, he complains about the artistic director! But we enjoyed his speech, it was honestly the funniest part of the evening. So, point to me for funny artistic director. We attended Ken Ludwig's Moriarty. Let me first say, that the last time I was here was to see a horrific production of Les Misérables put on by a bunch of amateur professionals? We walked out before intermission. It was THAT bad. The only other time I had walked out of a show was a production of Waiting for Godot. I got tired of waiting. Anyway, this production of Ken Ludwig's Moriarty can be summed up thusly. It's Ken Ludwig’s "The 39 Steps." The story is Meh. The plot, Meh. The comedy? Meh. The one thing I laughed at the most was the tiny little train that crossed the stage while the characters were on the train. Honestly, the show was not very funny. And after reading the national reviews for the original production they all agreed. Why they artistic director chose THIS show is beyond me. So, point to my dad for his complaint about the artistic director. The actors were competent. They make a big deal about them being union / professional actors, but honestly, I've seen just as good or better at several local community theaters full of strictly volunteers. There's a lot of talent out there. Continuing, the Set, lights, sound - AMAZING. This is where having professionals really pays off. I've seen some great sets at many local theaters, hell I used to build some of them, but this is an area of great consistency coming out of Meadowbrook. So, bravo in that regard. Other than that - for Moriarty, we were bored to tears. There were people laughing and really enjoying the show and many stood up at the end (standing ovations are way to common - they mean absolutely nothing anymore). So as a theater 3 out of 5. Maybe a better show, and it would have been 5 of 5. We shall see with the...
Read moreIt’s with a heavy heart I’m writing this review as this theater is one of my favorites. Always a spectacular show and experience- until tonight, when I was shown just how little this theater cares about its community.
We spent a small fortune on tickets to A Christmas Carol and unfortunately, the night of our show (tonight) is a blizzard. I already live an hour away, in good conditions, however tonight it’s closer to three. When I called to see what their refund or exchange policy I was told there was none- unless of course the venue cancels the show. Considering Medowbrook is on a college campus I would have assumed that they would close. However- they didn’t. I’m sorry, I’m not going to risk my life, or someone else’s to go to a show. Now, being in theater my whole life I fully understand what’s involved in a production. I also understand that this is Michigan and snow happens. But this is a severe winter storm warning. Schools are shutting down, companies are closed for the safety of everyone.
It’s just discouraging that a theater so revered within its community has such little regard for the safety of their staff, cast, crew and...

To see. Native Gardens on opening night 3/23/24
Plays are plays so let's discuss the venue.
Decent venue, not a bad seat in the house.
Our seats were 104 & 103 in Row J.
We looked and scouted the seats, but chose to sit in the top row seats 105 & 106
Excellent.
The hallway or corridor is crowded and a bit claustrophobic.
How so? Its narrow and tight. Plus the ticket booth is crammed right near door one, plus within 10 feet of the entrance, creating a bottleneck.
For instance at 5:50pm with a 6pm curtian There was 27 people in line for "will call tickets"
Trying to navigate that hall to reach the bathrooms, 200 yards away was difficult.
Parking was good.
2 old ancient restrooms C+
2 new restrooms A+
I would think twice before returning to...
