I first discovered Synetic Theater pretty soon after the founding duo, Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, arrived from Georgia in the 1990’s, and who purposed their particular brand of theater perhaps at first because, in part at least, they arrived with little English. But they soon captivated the town with their rigorously applied physicality and bold re-imaginings of classics. A host of their “silent Shakespeare” productions have become legends. In this production of The Immigrant, they have surpassed their own high bar. Their well analyzed observations of the clown work of the great silent screen star Charlie Chaplin are spot on. Vato Tsikurishvili is superb as The “ Little Fellow.” To see Paata, Vato’s real-life Dad after so many years share the stage with him was such a special treat. The blend of social dancing captures the 1920’s to perfection, and the cinematic sweep of from dock to Great Atlantic Crossing to glimpsing the Statue of Liberty for the first time to the harsh realities of street life in New Yok City are etched indelibly, each scene with its own rhythm and sound score. The fast pace of silent screen acting makes all the acrobatics and high jinx hilariously integrated. But what makes this story most memorable is its intimacy and pathos, revealing the personal story of the company’s Artistic Director, himself an immigrant. And at this time most especially, when immigrants are once again being devalued, it is heartbreaking in moments to see their dreams of America’s promise being shattered. Miss Statue of Liberty, a single dominant set piece is metaphor, and, God bless her, she looks more than a little...
Read moreAttending the latest rendition of "Romeo and Juliet" was an experience nothing short of amazing and stunning. It is genuinely surprising that this theatre company isn't more renowned, given the sparse audience, because what they've crafted here is a masterpiece of physical theatre with exceptional storytelling.
The choreography and combat fighting were nothing short of incredible, adding a visceral layer to the unfolding drama.
Innovatively, the set design incorporated cogs and mechanical elements, serving as a continuous reminder of time's relentless march. These cogs were cleverly repurposed throughout the performance, acting as doors, closets, and symbols of the spinning wheels of fate. This creative choice not only enhanced the visual appeal but also deepened the thematic resonance of the play.
During the ball scene through swirling movements and choreographed precision, they managed to evoke a sense of grandeur and social chaos, perfectly setting the stage for the star-crossed lovers' fateful meeting.
The musical composition and sound design deserve special mention for their contribution to the overall atmosphere. They underscored the emotional landscape of the play, weaving seamlessly with the action to enhance the narrative's impact. The final beeps of a life machine -.....wow
This production of "Romeo and Juliet" is a must-see for those who appreciate innovative physical theatre and compelling...
Read moreThere is NOTHING like this theater anywhere in the World! I'm a homeschool mom of six and we travel from Raleigh to DC just to see their performances.! My kids are pretty versed in all things Shakespeare and theater in general. Who would have thought that Shakespeare could be be speechless? Our first visit was for Alice and Wonderland, since then we have been pretty committed to making all of the shows unless we are traveling outside of the country. These performances are ALWAYS a highlight of our education and learning. I just recently brought a visiting friend from Barcelona with us, I told him, " you'll leave with your jaw literally on the ground"... He was thrilled!!!!!On the car ride home everyone argues over which performance has been their favorite. I don't know why we continue this debate because an hour later we are all exhausted and surrender knowing ALL are our favorites, and how can anyone attempt to choose!? Each spectacular and independently marvelous!!!!! Thank you x a million for this...
