I recently visited the dog park near my house, and while it has some great features, my experience was marred by the behavior of a few individuals. First, the park itself is quite lovely. It's well-maintained, with plenty of shade for both dogs and their owners. I appreciate the clean environment and the overall layout, which makes it a nice spot for dogs to socialize and play. However, I encountered a significant issue with some of the other park-goers. On several visits, particularly in the afternoons, I noticed a cliquish atmosphere. Many of the regulars seem to act like they own the place, and unfortunately, their behavior can be quite rude. During one visit, I was told that my polite and calm teenage son, who is 5’7”, wasn’t allowed in as there is a "no kids allowed" policy. This was surprising and unnecessary, especially since he was well-behaved and left everyone and their dogs alone.
More troubling was an incident with my dogs. My older dog can be vocal but is non-aggressive, while my 11-month-old puppy is energetic and playful. When a new dog entered the park, my dogs, eager to welcome the newcomer, unintentionally overwhelmed him. I tried to manage the situation by moving my older dog away to avoid scaring the new arrival. However, the owners of the new dog jumped to conclusions, misinterpreting my puppy’s enthusiasm as aggression and even resorting to kicking her. This was shocking behavior, and when I defended my puppy, a woman from the clique chimed in, further escalating the situation.
It's disheartening to see that if you're not part of their group, you risk facing unfair treatment or even aggression from others. I've read similar complaints from other visitors, which suggests this is not an isolated incident. In summary, while the park has its merits, the negative experiences with certain individuals can overshadow the enjoyment for many dog owners. If you're looking for a welcoming environment for both you and your dogs, I would recommend considering other options or visiting during off-peak hours when the atmosphere is...
Read moreMy partner and I just moved to Houston a couple months ago. I’ve got a rescued not-quite-2-year-old Belgian Malinois who is super high energy and needs a lot of exercise and stimuli every day. We live in our RV full time so we take frequent trips to dog parks. We’ve been to probably two dozen of them so far and Officer Lucy is one of our favorites. It’s got plenty of room to run and play Fetch (we use a Chuck-It stick), there’s always plenty of tennis balls around, and the obstacle course is perfect for my Mal to show off his skills. Usually we get there and the park is empty but the times we’ve met people they’re always super friendly and they’re always thrilled to have our dog chase their dogs around and get them exercise too. I always wear my Blundstones when I go because they’re waterproof and sometimes the park can get a little muddy in areas after a rain, but there’s a few large water pans and buckets and a garden hose to wipe off my Mal’s paws before he gets back in the car. As a Mal mom I always keep extra towels in the car for exactly this reason. My dog recognizes the area around the dog park and starts getting excited when we’re a mile out. We love...
Read moreThe park itself is ok, but the people who seems to come here regularly around 5-6 pm is not. A very unwelcoming dog park.
One dog came and several dogs barked at him or checked him out. A white lady only said to me ‘you should take your dog out of here, because looks like your dog does not fit for this park’ when my dog is on the side minding his own business after he checked out the new dog while and several other dogs kept barking or growling at him. She didn’t say anything to another dog owner whose dog kept growling at another smaller dog, and looks like they know each other.
If you are going to ask a person to leave, please ask all the dog owner whose dog is ‘misbehaving’ to leave. In this park, all the owner should be terrified to have your dog show a slight interest to other dogs or making any sound. Never see anything like this in some bigger dog parks.
After the group of people who comes everyday and likes to stand in circle at the entrance left and bunch of new dog owners came, everyone and dogs are...
