REAL STORY: Never a film studio, and not originally in this location, the Spadena House, also known as the Witch House of Los Angeles, was originally built in 1921 by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver. It was designed as a whimsical, storybook-style structure to serve as offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat's silent film studio in Culver City. Later, in 1934, the entire house was moved to Beverly Hills, and transformed into a private residence, with a storybook gate and authentic moat. While it wasn’t necessarily a movie set backdrop, it was meant to be part of the studio’s environment, capturing the fairytale aesthetic they wanted to evoke.
