I normally don't subscribe to Conservative "they're taxing us to death!" nonsense, but, in the case of the Tobin Bridge, um, yeah, it's a huge racket! First, there was no outbound toll in forever and then in the mid-2010s they decided to bring that back since it's easier to do with electronic tolling gantries versus the old-school toll booth style. I personal DON'T have a problem paying tolls--but there should always be an ALTERNATIVE, even if it's a much slower route. And there was: for anybody who's ever stood near the end of Chelsea St in Charlestown, underneath the Tobin Bridge, and looked over the Mystic River towards Admiral's Hill in Chelsea and though, "What a short distance--I wonder if we could build a bridge here!"... THERE WAS! The Chelsea St Bridge used to connect from the end of Chelsea St right over the river to Chelsea St (now Broadway) in Chelsea! So what did the state do: they TORE DOWN the little bridge and built the big one! Okay, so cars go on the bridge... but what about PEDESTRIANS and CYCLISTS! How much easier would it be to go back-and-forth between Charlestown and Admiral's Hill if you could just walk/bike across the river! On foot or by bike the ONLY route is to go all the way around on Alford St (Rt 99) and then go through the Produce District in Everett into Chelsea! Efficient??!! Where are Netherlands...
Read moreTerrible. We understand repairs and upkeep are definite throughout it's span but there must be a better way to do it or not so much at once for long periods of times (2 years!?) to add more to the increasingly growing traffic. We're at one lane going towards Chelsea. Awesome. Getting worse each year. Used to be when you were on the road at 5am you might see a few cars now thats climbed back to 2 or 3 am. 6am is comparable to what rush hour 830/9 am traffic used to be. Too much digging all at once everywhere in ma from RI boarder to the NH line. Dig a hole, disrupt traffic. Later fill it in with rocks(disrupt traffic) and leave it till the fall the dig it out(disrupt traffic) and pave it with camel humps. NH built a whole overpass and ramp during a...
Read moreThe bridge is a big help going to and from Boston and other areas. The Bridge now has tolls both ways, if you don't have an easy pass you'll get a bill in the mail monthly watch for it, it's about .50c more than an EZ-PASS transponder and pay by plate late fees are high. The new charges on the Bridge started soon after Gov. Baker was elected into office. The bridge is falling apart, it needs to be kept up where's the taxpayers money going to? There's cameras on the Bridge also, I was hit from behind on the bridge and they took off into the traffic, I could not get anyone (Police, Town Hall, etc.) to look at the cameras for me SO WHY ARE WE PAYING FOR THEM? The bridge is a big help, they should fix it and keep...
