EDIT: I have had to re-determine the level of care received here after my initial response. Let me say that my impression has dropped. I will say that the nursing staff was helpful, but not quite as attentive to things as they should have been. My fiancé had an issue that was clearly noticeable if they had been looking for any issues. They need to be more attentive to the body of their patient. He was released too early from the hospital,(when there were clearly issues still there) and had to end up going back to the hospital to have another procedure and to have infection removed from his body. He is in the hospital as I type this, receiving treatment for infection. I would not want him to go back here at this point. The medical staff needs to revamp when they send a patient home. He came home the first day feeling badly. The feeling progressed and the infection grew that was clearly there in earlier X-rays taken at this facility. You may want to reconsider using this facility and some of the surgeons here. I said I would respond again later on depending on how things went here. Let me just say, it doesn't appear right now that things went so well here. I should know more in the next week about exactly what happened. The nurses were not bad, but they need to be more attentive about checking the incisions where surgery was done, as well as the surrounding areas. The floor doctors need to also be more attentive. Sometimes they come in the room and don't even touch the patient or examine them. How is that acceptable? The floor doctor should have caught the issue on the body. We had to tell them about the issue because we found it. They never saw it.
I’m a bit surprised at so many 1 star ratings. This is my first visit to this hospital with my fiancé. He was in for outpatient surgery. It seems a lot of the reviews are concerning the ER service and some of the nurses and the floor care. My review is from my experience today, April 28, 2022 with outpatient surgery. From the time we walked in the front door we were greeted by the lady asking questions about covid, gave us a mask, and armbands. We were directed over to the next desk to check in. The lady working the check in desk was very kind and helpful. She gave clear and concise instructions and I inquired about a cafeteria which she told me existed and that it was very good. We proceeded to the second floor where our wait time was very minimal. The nurse(who was very kind and helpful) came out to take the patient back and talked to us and explained everything in detail, and how I would get texts throughout the procedure. Within minutes I had a text. I regularly had texts letting me know the procedure had started and letting me know where they were in the procedure right up until the procedure was over and to report to the desk to speak with the surgeon. At the end of the procedure I was directed to a very private room and the surgeon showed up within 10 to 15 minutes and explained everything. After our dialogue, I went back to the Surgical lobby area to wait until he was out of recovery. I received another text that he was in recovery, immediately. I have been very pleased with communication and everything proceeded like clockwork today. Organization seemed to be top notch. The facility is very nice, clean, and the staff I encountered were all very helpful. The cafeteria breakfast food was in fact delicious like the front desk lady said it would be, and just as good as any restaurant. The workers there were kind and helpful also. As long as my fiancé’s surgery turns out well over the long haul, I will be very impressed with this area of the hospital, and I hope over the next few days I won’t have any reason to change my 5 star review. The process was smooth and the waiting area for surgery is very comfortable and pleasant. Based on today’s experience, I would have to recommend this hospital. It was a much better experience than the last surgery at a different hospital. If anything changes as far as the procedure, I will...
Read moreThis was literally the worst hospital experience I’ve ever encountered. Parents of toddlers/ infants, learn from my mistake. We just moved to the area after being Duke and UNC patients. My one year old was experiencing labored breathing and high temps, during a time where flu/Covid/RSV are spiking. I thought going to the closest ER would be smarter than taking the extra 15 mins to go to Duke or UNC childrens. Don’t make my mistake and if you have a baby that needs care after hours please go straight to the childrens hospital. This was AWFUL. 8-10 hour wait to be seen by a doctor. With the labored breathing we were worried about oxygen levels so we stayed to get triaged which we were told would happen almost immediately. 35 mins later we were seen for vitals where my daughter had a 103.8 fever. Then another 30 or so mins we had to wait for an X-ray. They took a respiratory panel to test for RSV, flu, Covid, and said it would probably take 90 mins for results. They said we’d probably see the results in MyChart before we see a doctor, but when I went to register for a cone health mychart (we just have Duke set up), I could not register online for a minor child. I’d have to fill out a PAPER/pdf form to send in and it would take at least two business days to process. So no results. After 2 hours of waiting in a waiting room where there were SOOO many sick people coughing everywhere and absolutely miserable, we decided we weren’t going to wait the 8-10 hours and it would be safer to be at home and manage symptoms with Tylenol/Motrin. Upon leaving, they would not release any of the results to us unless we waited the 8 hrs to be seen by the doctor. When we requested a transfer to Duke or unc, they refused to transfer us or sign off on it unless, once again, we waited 8 hours for the doctor. When the woman sitting beside us told us she’d been waiting since 2pm (and it was now 10pm) we decided to leave. There was a poor infant/newborn waiting in the wake room for hours. People in hospital beds coughing like crazy with blankets in the waiting room waiting for rooms. And the front desk was not helpful. I ended up asking for water for my one year old at some point because the vending machines were out of water and there was no cafeteria. And the PA who saw us said to make sure we were giving her fluids. They said they would get some water for us after speaking to the nurse, and then they never did. I also had to change a diaper and looked for a restroom. The restroom had a sign that said “ask the front desk for the family rest room.” When I asked, they said they had no idea what I was talking about and they didn’t have a family room. Finally a nurse told them to take us in the back hospital area to the family room, which we were escorted to but instead of the restroom I was walking towards they led me to a “family consult” room that was literally a small wait area room with couches. So I changed my baby on a couch that probably wasn’t sanitized before or after, as no one followed up with me while I was in there or after I left. It’s a day later and we still don’t know any results of my daughters test. She’s thankfully seeming a lot better today, but I’m really horrified by this experience and will definitely be sticking with our Duke hospital system and making the travel when needed. Avoid cone health...
Read moreI had foot surgery (bone fracture) at the Cone Health Alamance Regional Medical Center yesterday.
My experience was exceptional. The nurse who was looking after me, Karen, was very caring, calm, and made me feel comfortable in the otherwise unfamiliar environment. She did a very good job with pre-operation questionnaires – bullet points were not rushed through but it felt more like a meaningful conversation. All other prep work was carried out calmly, always explaining to me what she was doing. (In contrast, when I was in another facility in a similar situation, a nurse would enter the prep-nook, starting to work on an IV access with neither introducing herself nor making eye contact.) Karen also did a great job including my wife in the briefing and ensured to keep her updated as the procedure progressed. Thank you for your great work, Karen! I am certain that having had the procedure start with you, has contributed greatly to my overall experience and the success of the operation!
While my interaction with the anesthesiologist, Dr. Woodson, was limited, I felt in very good hands. He also was very calm and explained very well what he was doing, to make me feel as comfortable as possible. Before applying a “knee block”, for example, he took his time to carefully inspect the area with ultra sound. The actual application was done carefully, always cross-checking progress per ultra-sound.
The surgeon, Dr. Baker, has been great– during pre-operation visits as well as the day of. I have to add that due to a misunderstanding on my part, my morning surgery appointment had to be moved to the late afternoon which he accommodated, surely impacting his plans for after work. When interacting with Dr. Baker, he seems very down to earth, honest, and relatable. He is not your MD with a golfer’s tan and a Porsche convertible sitting in his personalized parking spot. The fact that someone chooses this career not just for the money and glory, shows that they are actually interested in the work and in their patients. A short anecdote from the pre-operation appointment: At the end of the consultation, he commented on the bandage material I had been using. Instead of leaving that point unaddressed (I would be getting surgery anyway), he applied a new bandage himself and gave advice on how to put it on. Typically, an MD would have nursing staff do this type of work (if at all).. As far as I can tell at this stage, the surgery has gone very well. I am happy that Dr. Baker had been able to choose the least complex solution to mend the broken bone. A testament to his caring and detail-focused approach were the notes on the operation – a very detailed description of what was done, which materials were used, and his assessment of the effectiveness of each step performed. Should I ever need help with a foot injury in the future, I would, without hesitation, choose Dr....
