Laura Michael Wines — Attraction in California

We were really looking forward to our visit to Laura Michael wines based on the reviews but Laura was not our host as we had hoped. I am not sure what the lady's name was as she did not tell us. We were offered indoor or outdoor seating and chose the latter, it is a lovely setting. For the tasting we were given a good amount of wines to taste but we had one white and the rest were red, more variation would have been preferable. Having said that we did really like most of the wines. We learnt a lot of interesting facts about wine and it's the only vineyard we've been to that we were provided with fresh glasses for different wines which was a big bonus point from us! If we were being really honest we didn't feel we could relax as much as other wine tastings we've been to as our host sat with us the whole time, she was a lovely lady but it just felt a little awkward at times making conversation. We walked up to the vineyard and asked if we could have a little walk around to see more but were told only the owner's dogs can walk around. On our third day in Calistoga, we reached out to the winery to see if we could do a tasting. Michael answered the phone and since we were so close by where we were staying, he noodled us into a tasting in about five minutes and when we got there, the welcoming committee of puppies was absolutely incredible! And then down came Michael to make us feel like we were visiting a favorite uncle or cousin to spend some time at his home drinking good wine and chatting about things we understood. It helped a little that he happened to be local to where we’re from, so we shared some stories about summer at home.

We just completed our most recent visit to Laura Michael Wines in late October 2024 and, as always, it was a fantastic experience. We were served by Laura and enjoyed tasting and learning about several of the estate's wines. We keep coming back to Laura Michael Wines because the variety and quality of the wines is great and both Laura and Michael are a great source of knowledge about wine which if, like us, you are looking to understand the details and nuances of wine, is important. Among their collection, they have a great Zinfandel, a several great Cabs and a blend called "A Quiet Moment" that is perfect for just sipping on an autumn day.
