We just had an awesome experience with the Nature Center of Cape May! A guided tour (physical distancing and masks, with our friends) and history and background of Beach Plums.
Wow. Gretchen Whitman led the group tour that we bid on and won at the Nature Center's Catch of Cape May 2020 (virtual) fundraiser. Incredible morning.
A brief history and background on beach plums (who knew these little gems were so special!), then a hike into the dunes to see wild beach plums and pick some for our use later. Since this is apparently not a good year for wild beach plums, Ms. Whitman arranged for a visit to a cultivated beach plum orchard so we could see them in a bountiful state.
Great experience - recipes, samples of beach plum products, history of the fruit, cultivation efforts, and a hike to see these precious plants in the wild. Thanks Gretchen and we cannot wait for things to settle down so we can take part in more of the Nature Center of Cape May's...

Small play kitchen, live bee hive, turtles, snakes, a tarantula, an outlook with pretty views, a small shed with water tanks that have horseshoe crabs, crabs, urchins, seahorse, and more. The staff are very friendly and helpful. If your kids are much older than 4 or 5, it may not be a "destination" that would take more than 20 min. ย ย ย Read moreThis place is a must-see with kids. It is very hands on. Thereโs a beautiful little childrenโs garden to explore with butterflies and birds. My children loved playing on the giant Monarch caterpillar. They also enjoyed playing in the little play kitchen under the stairs. Upstairs includes binoculars for bird watching with an amazing view, a few reptiles, rocks and minerals, and a sensory station where you can examine various insect samples. The bathroom was spotless. Donโt forget your free Ranger Rick magazine on the way out. We had so much fun, we had to come visit twice on...
