This is going to be a very nice park. I say "going to be" only because they took the fences down so families could enjoy it on New Years. Amenities: 2 dog parks, one for the little dogs and one for big dogs, with obstacles. 1 full court and 1/2 court basketball courts (Now that I think about it, I don't think there were benches for those not playing. 3 levels of playgrounds for all the kids. As a parent, this was where we spent most of our time. There could be more seating around the playground so you will be close by watching and playing with the kids. Most seating areas were under the two canopy areas nearby and I see that becoming an issue if events are going on. The lower level were for the younger ones and as you work up the hill, you will find it's geared towards older kids. (Although, my 2 year-old was having a blast on all the sections) there were a couple of different things that I've never seen at a park before, and I've been to a few. (Lounge chair swing and bull-dozer that actually scoops sand.) Two open fields, one on either side of the pool. One is near the playground and is large enough to have a full football or soccer game, although it curves a bit.The other one is near the basketball courts and not as large but more secluded as it's not where MOST of the families will be playing at. The skatepark has verts and a street course. I can see future pro skaters in there already. I watched some pretty incredible stunts and tricks take place all throughout the skatepark. The pool has plenty going on as well. It was closed but it is definitely the centerpiece that the city wanted to focus on. There is an amusement park-type entrance. A patio area separated from the pool area, obviously meant for events. 2 low-dive and 2 high-dive diving boards. A little water play area for the kids, one pool that looks to be recreational/diving and for their sporting type of events like Water Polo. One lap pool. Don't know too much about it though, since it was closed. The ball fields were still a bit under construction but it looks to be three of them and one is completely done. So, the park may actually live up to the hype. Carlsbad talked about this one and planned it for over 10 years. I don't even skate and know that the skatepark is going to be very popular. The pool, as long as there's reasonable plans to make it open to the public and such, should be very popular as well. There really is something to do for everybody. If you go to the park planning to use more than one amenity, there may be a lot of walking and standing involved. Also, they could use more barbecue grills. There's only one in the entire section where the playground is and there are canopies at the park that don't even have a barbecue grill. This is a very nice park and worth the visit. It's a beautiful park, sitting in a valley but still great views. Photographers will love it and I know some family picutures will probably be taken here as certain areas are very nice. (In regards to beauty for pictures doesn't beat the little park off of Palomar Airport Rd and Camino Vida Roble though) My family will be back to Alga Norte many times and we no longer live...
Read moreI'm at the Alga Norte dog park once or twice a day and my dog enjoys it. Most days it is uneventful and if you pick your times mid day you will probably have a good experience. But most dog park people have NOT read the green dog park sign and do not understand their personal liability should their dog attack another dog.
Mornings before ten and after 5 pm it can be filled with two dozens or more dogs. If you come, stay close to your dog. There are some aggressive dogs and owners that do not monitor their dogs and after their dog attacks, they say "Oh, they are just playing" or "it was mutual." Yeah, right!
Today I was bitten on the hand by a german shepherd while HOLDING my dog! The german shepherd dog owner was 6'6" and 240 lbs wearing an MMA shirt. Talk about feeling threatened by the dog and the owner! I told him to collar his dog and he finally did.
I have spoken with Sgt. Olson of the Carlsbad Police Dept. about the Alga Norte dog park. He advises that since dogs are personal property you can do what "is reasonable and prudent" to protect your property. That means you may pull another dog off of yours.
Sgt. Olson says if there is ever a conflict between owners, dogs, he encourages owners to call the police and they'll send down an officer. And that has happened several times before too.
To be clear, this is a dog park, but it is run by humans. If you see a problem with another owner, it is incumbent on you to ask the offender to leash their dog and leave. Otherwise your indifference becomes part of...
Read moreIt is a really nice park. Coming down the road I thought I was going to find stores and restaurants but it is a park. It is very complete let me tell you. The först thing I have seen is the kids playground. Then I notice the other building and the have a couple of sport pools. There's an information office with two ladies, really nice. I was able to find the bathroom bear the basketball court at the end of the buildings. They are really nice, clean and have the amenities necessary. I also see a baseball field and maybe also tennis and there's another one I don't reach to see. You can even cook here!! There's a huge parking structure. Skateboarding space and a dog park that I haven't seen but this lady with a dog told me it is somewhere near the basketball court along the path in that area. Seems like they have a lot of activities!! Best place if you live in...
