Wanted to see the old Jail and the only option was a guided tour. We were the first people in and then another couple came in... after waiting 45 min. we started the tour and then another couple came and had to wait and start over. They said the mandated tour was an hour. We had just waited 45 mins. and we were the first ones there. There was another lady worker there who asked to help and the man said no. I guess he was the only one qualified to teach us the history. Most of us knew the history already and that was why we were there. Even the other couples knew a lot. We ended up leaving after the 4th group came in and we had to wait for them and were going to end up starting all over again. Our hour long tour hadn't really started we were still at the entrance and we were there 45 mins. Please post signs saying that the tour is mandatory, but I'm not sure how many people will want to go on the gilded tour with information they already knew. We wanted to see the old jail not get a history of franklin county and...
Read moreMy family and I went here last Saturday, we thought it would be something fun and educational. After entering and walking around for a few minutes, we were approached an employee who was obviously on a massive power-trip, and told that there were no un-guided tours, and our only option was to pay $10 for an hour long tour, an offer I wasn't too keen on accepting. We have three small kids (one of them with a walker due to a broken leg) and I got the impression that we were very much NOT welcome there.
I'm not sure what their reason is for requiring all guests to be supervised, but I think it's ridiculous. If you're going to charge admission, just make me pay at the door. It appears as if these people have created a reason for their jobs to exist. It's a real shame that they have chosen to do it this way, because I would have gladly made a donation larger than $10 afterwards, had my family not been chased out of there like a group of rambunctious teenagers.
We will...
Read moreWe had an amazing experience. To actually step into a stop on the underground railroad... and watching my daughters take it all in, was beyond moving. We traveled up from DC just to visit this location. It is an amazing piece of history! I forgot the gentleman's name who gave us our tour. But, he was phenomenal. He was super helpful with showing up other places to visit while in Chambersburg, and even suggested a great local diner where we got some great food. If you want to travel back in time for a ridiculously inexpensive price... Visit The Old Jail! We definitely plan to go back in October for the escape the...
