Great for biking, walking, jogging from 5400 N to the Loop to 6000 S to the U of C. I bike it most mornings even in the winter snow. A real jewel for the city. In January of 2020 there were some horrible storms. Driven by strong eastern winds which included 45 mph gusts parts of the trail were obliterated. The concrete was broken up so bad it was impossible. The high lake level washed away some of the trail taking away sections of the sand beach at Oak street, from Oak street to Fullerton and parts further north including Montrose. I am writing this in January of 2020 so things may have been somewhat restored by the time you are reading this, but the task will take quite some time, so best to check conditions ahead of time. Some sections during that period may be completely closed to bike, jogging and even walking. Not sure if all the water fountains will be functioning, so take a bit of H20. Update: Everything has been restored and it is safe to use the trail...
Read moreThis trail follows the coast of Lake Michigan, affording great views of the lake, boating, waterfowl and docks on one side and the Chicago skyline at its most impressive on the other. There are basically two trails...one for pedestrians and the other for cyclists. The trail is well-maintained and fairly easy, although there are some slopes here and there.
The trail connects spots such as Navy Pier and the various lakefront parks with a spur that goes to the Art Institute of Chicago and Millenium Park.
There are restrooms along the trail but perhaps not as many as we might hope so take advantage when the opportunity...
Read moreA nice trail system along Lake Michigan. The day we walked this trail Lake Michigan had been building a lot of fetch due to a strong north east wind that was running down the length of the lake. There were waves in the 10 to 12 foot range. The trail is flat and easy to use. It runs 28 miles from the north side to the south side. Although people in Chicago are notorious for refusing to make eye contact, all our fellow walkers were an exception to this rule. Free, beautiful and safe. A very pleasant way to traverse the city. Bike, skate, hike or jog it is a pleasant way...
