We stayed in one of the waterfront cabins over the Memorial Day weekend. We arrived via Lyft at 9:20P. We did not receive any communication from the venue about where to check in. When you look at google maps, it shows the correct location for the cabins but checkin is at the Mansion about a mile away. On the way, I called the retreat and spoke with someone off site who told me I needed to have my Lyft driver wait while I checked in at the mansion so that he could drive me a mile down the road since the front desk didn't provide that service at night. Fortunately, when we arrived at the mansion, the nice front desk manager drove us in the golf cart to the cabin and made sure the key worked. We should have received emails in advance of our visit explaining this situation to avoid confusion. We had flown from the west coast without dinner provided on the flight to Albany and we were very hungry. Albany airport was closing down so we could not get any food there. Upon arrival, we were told the kitchen closed at 9:30P, not enough time for us to get food. There is no mini-bar or snacks available. The nice front desk man had a bag of chips that he gave us and waters.
The cabins are very cute. The design team did a nice job in creating an environment where you feel like you're in a fancy camp. It should be noted that the cabins are very small. We had two small international size carry on suitcases and had a hard time figuring out where to unpack. Finally, I opened my suitcase on the floor, (you couldn't walk around it) took everything out, and we put the empty suitcase on an uppermost shelf. We put our backpacks on the small table and the other suitcase on the one luggage rack they provide. There's a fire extinguisher in the closet that takes up a lot of the lower floor space making it hard for anything to fit in the closet. The bathroom barn door would not stay closed but instead would slide all the way open every time we tried to close it. There were no extra blankets, towels, etc in the cabin. We requested some and they were delivered promptly.
In the morning, we woke to a spectacular view of the Hudson River. The location of the river view cabins is fantastic. When we booked our stay, we were told that a continental breakfast was included but upon check in we were told that not enough people were staying at the retreat/spa so they were delivering box breakfasts between 8-8:30A. We were also told that the spa was not open (remember it's Memorial Day weekend) but that we could have a bon fire at night and that they could open one of the saunas if we wanted. This was not as advertised at the time we booked our stay and of course we did not get a discounted rate on the rooms.
On the first morning, we could not take advantage of the box breakfast because we needed it to be delivered at 7:30A and we were told that was impossible. On the second morning, we called at 8:45A to see why we did not receive our box breakfast. We were told it would be at our cabin right away. It never arrived. At 9:15 we had to drive to our morning activities and when we came back to the cabin, it still was not there. Finally, on the last morning when we were checking out we got the box breakfast delivered and it was delicious.
We attended the onsite Field and Supply makers market event and the front desk/website didn't have the discount code even though they were a sponsor. Finally, the front desk person texted a code. This was a great event.
When we were there we noticed the restaurant was open at lunch time. We found out it was open every day for lunch but this was never communicated to us. We were told it was only open for dinner. In speaking with a vendor at the market, she said they had dinner there the night before and the 17 year old server was nice but made a bunch of mistakes on their order.
The bottom line is that it felt like the Hutton Brickyards Retreat and Spa was run by nice people who had no idea what they were doing. This beautiful property is poorly managed without appropriate systems, processes, and...
Read moreOverpriced and Overstated amenities. Pros: The staff was for the most part very friendly and tried their best to help The grounds are beautiful Our experience at the restaurant was fantastic and we enjoyed the food Cons: We booked the "Ultimate Reconnect + Recharge Getaway Package" which came with a list of inclusions which were either overstated or did not exist. Check in is at a separate location from the cabins. We were given limited instructions and had a hard time navigating to the cabins themselves. When we walked in, the room was 50 degrees fahrenheit and we could not get the heat to stay on. When we tried to shower, we learned that there was no hot water. Our package included “welcome cocktails for two” which never happened and was never brought up. We were hungry for dinner and the minifridge was empty. We called the front desk and asked if we could have food sent to us (fully expecting to pay an additional fee) but we were informed that the restaurant was seating only and required a reservation, and there were no other food options but we would be able to order uber eats. The next morning we could see that our cabin was a trailer that had been converted into a tiny living space. Our package stated that we would receive “breakfast in bed” and we thought we might get some sort of menu to choose what we wanted, but we were informed that there was no menu and breakfast would be delivered between 8-10am, which was annoying as we wanted to plan our day and get an early start. When breakfast arrived, it was a thermos of gas station quality coffee, an unripe orange, 2 single serve greek yogurts, a quarter cup of granola and two stale bagels with two single serve containers of cream cheese. Our package also included “S’mores by the fire for two one evening” which gave the idea that we would be treated to a nice fire and given everything needed to make ourselves s'mores. We noticed in our room that there was a brown bag containing the ingredients to make two s’mores, wrapped in plastic. We were told that we could call and ask for someone to make a fire for us when we wanted. This seemed to be a common theme at Hutton Brickyards, If you did not call and ask someone on the phone, you would not get anything. When we did call and ask for a fire, it was almost burnt out when we got there and there was no wood nearby to keep it going. We made our individual s’mores and then went back to our room disappointed.
The sauna was also not available to us, when we called we were told that we would just need to call and ask for it to be unlocked so we could take advantage of our “couples’ wood barrel sauna session.” We called on Sunday morning to ask to be let in, and were then told that we needed to book online. There were no available slots until after we planned to leave in the afternoon, and there was no way to book without paying an additional fee despite this being included in our package.
Hutton Brickyards is charging over $500 a night for some of these rooms and marketing itself as a luxury hotel, with vastly overstated and non accessible perks. We made the best of our trip and still had a good time, but we cannot recommend that anyone else come here. Some things were disappointing and dishonest, like the description of breakfast in bed, the romantic s’mores by the fireplace, welcome cocktails and the sauna session. And others were unacceptable, like our room being freezing cold during check in and having no hot water, which was never fixed despite us asking. It was able to reach room temperature after the "repair", but we were unable to take a warm, relaxing shower all weekend.
On top of that, you do not have any easily understood way of accessing anything without calling someone on the phone and asking for each individual thing. For a package that is being sold and marketed in this way, we expected things to be explained and made seamless for us, especially at this price point. For what it is, it is fine. But it is overpriced and we felt deceived by what we were promised in...
Read moreI almost never leave reviews. Please read before booking.
This is ANYTHING BUT a retreat and spa. When I arrived at the hotel, we checked in to our King Cabin and were shocked to find out there are no televisions in any of the rooms. The website specifically lists that there are televisions with cable in the King Cabins. After looking through these reviews, people have been posting about the website lying about TVs for months. They are deliberately not updating their room amenities in order to scam the customers.
Almost everything that the website lists wasn't available during my stay. There were no yoga classes, no archery classes, no bookable spa sessions. The River Pavilion was closed. When I booked this weeks ago, the website listed all of these things as being available.
The website still lists "In the spring, summer and fall, The River Pavilion is our waterfront restaurant featuring panoramic views of the Hudson." - End of Oct/Early November is the fall. To add to this, there were signs around the property that showed it was open when it wasn't! I've attached photos below.
The website shows that there are "Thirsty" Flags available to hand outside your cabin so that staff can drop off drinks! Wasn't available.
The sauna was available which was nice! But $20/month gyms have them.
I contacted the front desk to complain about these missing amenities and asked for a manager to contact me. When I received a call back, the woman explained that she wasn't the manager but would be refunding me $100 for the issues. When I explained that wasn't good enough, they also offered to pay for my dinner at the Edgewood restaurant.
When it came time to pay the bill at the restaurant, the staff had no idea what I was talking about and were not told my meal was supposed to be taken care of. Thankfully, eventually it was. I appreciate the staff for trying to rectify my situation but the things they were able to offer were not enough to make the stay enjoyable. Even with the discount, this hotel was over $350 a night. That is the nightly rate of a four star hotel in Manhattan. The manager of the hotel never contacted me to talk about these issues.
This birthday get away was anything but a 'retreat.' There is nothing to do on the premises, nowhere to have lunch. Everything is off their property, requiring you to drive and spend more money to have ANYTHING to do. Absolutely nothing to do, not even sit in bed and watch TV!
For $400/night average, this was the single worst experience I have ever had at a hotel. While speaking to the guests staying in the cabins near me, they also agreed that it was a complete waste on money and talked about how upset they were. Even with the credits that the hotel agreed to give me, this was more than double the price of what it should have been.
The ONLY redeeming quality of this place is that the hotel staff are excellent, everyone was extremely nice. It's not their fault that their website is false advertising and the hotel is mismanaged.
I will go as far to say that the website is basically fraud at this point. You cannot list amenities as being included with the room and then not offer them. Especially when multiple reviews have brought this issue up. It is on purpose.
When I checked out and received my bill via email, the $100 credit I was promised, was not on my bill. I called immediately and was told a manager would call me back. It has now been almost 48 hours and I have still not...
