Discovering the African Art Museum of Maryland (AAMM) was an unexpected delight during our visit to Columbia, MD. Established in 1980, AAMM stands as a pioneer, being the first museum in Columbia and one of only three in the entire USA dedicated solely to the art of Africa. What sets it apart is the fact that it was founded by an African American, adding a unique perspective to the museum's identity.
Meeting co-founder Ms. Doris Ligon was a highlight, her wealth of knowledge adding a personal touch to the experience. The impact of AAMM on the community is evident, fostering cultural appreciation and understanding. The value of the art showcased is immeasurable, offering a rich glimpse into the diverse and vibrant heritage of Africa.
The museum's commitment to quality is striking, with each exhibit reflecting a meticulous curation that captivates visitors. Highly recommended, AAMM provides not just a visual feast but an educational journey. For those fortunate enough to encounter Ms. Doris Ligon, her insights elevate the visit, making it a truly enriching...
Read moreI decided to be fair and not write this review while I was upset at this venue. I did my part and waited two full days and I am just as agitated. I went to this place during business hours (as advertised on their own website) and, on a Saturday no less, rhe place was closed. I drove about 45 minutes with a professor of anthropology and sociology who lives in South America, only to be greeted by a “closed” sign (when they were supposed to be open. I even asked a woman innthe adjoinkng church if she knew why they were closed and, though not her responsibility, she hinted that they should have been open and the person who was supposed to be there didn’t seem to leave for good reason. This was frustrating and embarrassing for me, not to mention a waste of valuable time. The we site is eager to solicit donations for their museum, but they owe me an explanation. GO AT...
Read moreI took my grandson to see the museum. The owner gave him a thorough tour of the museum. She was so passionate about her museum and it was contagious. It's a small museum, but quite impressive. She told stories, described many art pieces as well as the history and the culture of individual pieces and tribes. My grandson's grandfather is from Nigeria so I asked her to show him art from that country in particular and she not only showed us that, but was very detailed in her descriptions and asked my grandson questions about his grandfather. I highly recommend...
