Several 2nd and 3rd generation titles I looked at were almost double PriceCharting values, which themselves are about double true market value. i.e. Loose Atari 2600 Mario Bros is for sale here for 29.99 (another was priced at 19.99). PriceCharting lists it currently at $16.56, and its true market value is somewhere around $10.00. This means they are selling that game 3 times what it is worth, and only if the game and its label are in perfect condition.
On a positive note, some of their CIBs are priced fairly, some were overpriced, and they have a few competitively priced NES loose games. The store is clean, parking is ample, and the young lady and gentleman working there were very friendly and helpful. I decided to buy a handful of CIBs because the staff put up with me for 15 minutes, they worked with me on the final price for the lot, and the gentleman was literally the first game store staff I've encountered in the entire state of Florida to concede that they do not price these older games to move (sell), and they do not mind at all holding onto their inventory for a very long period of time (years?) with the hope of an eventual buyer at the marked price, however overpriced they are. Odd business strategy, but a strategy nonetheless, and one that is obviously shared by the vast majority of other retro game stores, as evidenced by Atari 2600 inventories at nearly every retro game store being unchanged (meaning little to no sales) for 12 months. To this location's credit, and unlike the others, at least they admit it.
I did not look at any items newer than 1987, so the rest of their items might very well be or might not be priced fairly.
EDITED TO REPLY TO OWNER FEEDBACK
I've increased the rating due to this owner's quick and generous responsiveness. That trait alone is rare. Thank you, Mike! I live about 100 miles away, (Sanford) but travel all over Florida every day for business, and I do find myself in the East Tampa/Brandon/Riverview area once every week or two for business. I make it a point to visit all of the retro games stores in the areas in which I'm working, so I will definitely be coming back to see you, either at this store or the Riverview location...
Read moreThis is one of THE ABSOLUTE BEST gaming stores in all of the area maybe in the whole world. Honest and transparent about EVERYTHING gaming. Great selection of all generation consoles, games, accessories. Super knowledgeable on everything gaming there is not a question they won’t be able to answer. Top notch repairs done in reasonable time frames. Fair pricing and willing to negotiate reasonably. I drive over 35 miles away to exclusively do business with this store. Every single person that works here will hook you up and treat you right. Thank you Mike for providing such a great spot and being a friendly dude. Also thank you Tamyr, Ben, and Ricky for being great employees and awesome people. I recommend this store to ANYONE and EVERYONE I come in contact with and will continue to happily do so. A real game store run by real gamers. I genuinely love...
Read moreFirst time at game asylum today and I actually live quite a bit aways but read some reviews and seemed worth the trip. Went in to pick up your typical gameboy sp but was surprised to see quite some reasonably priced modded gameboy advances that ended up being more comfortable and nicer than the sp I originally wanted. With it being in store I felt much more comfortable getting a modded system than ebay since you never know what your going to get and the employees there were more than helpful with each and every decision made on top of going out of there way to price games they haven’t even made it to yet just so I had more options than what was even on display to choose from which normally most wouldn’t even offer since it’d be extra work on there part. Awesome experience overall...
