This has quickly become one of our favorite record stores in St. Louis (if not our favorite!) The selection is eclectic, with an impressive mix of old and new vinyl, rare original pressings, film soundtracks, etc. The music runs the gamut and there’s always something to desire. The whole store is lovingly decorated, well-organized, and impeccably maintained. But the back of the store may be the biggest and most welcome surprise, as it creates a setting akin to stepping into a video store in the 1980s and perusing the horror section; a real rush of nostalgia and intrigue. This store is an essential stop for anyone in St. Louis who’s fond of cult and horror cinema. There’s beautifully displayed, high quality movie masks, a robust collection of boutique blu-rays (Criterion, Arrow Video, Scream Factory, Vinegar Syndrome, Synapse Films), even rare laserdiscs (like vintage Criterions!) and old-school horror video tapes with big box art and those iconic green “horror” sticker labels. Then there’s the action figures (the latest in NECA and the like) and glass-cased collectibles that really catch your eye. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the owner is clearly a great enthusiast of what he’s cultivating and selling here, and it makes a big difference. There’s a palpable sense of community to the store (he’s graciously invited us to film screenings at STL venues on multiple occasions) and it’s the type of place you feel comfortable spending an entire evening in. In truth, there’s nowhere else in St. Louis that so lovingly collects so many neat things in one place. In the age of internet anonymity, the tactile experience of buying movies and music is sadly a frequent casualty, but not so at the Record Space. Prices are extremely fair when you factor in the overall experience, and consider also what it would cost with shipping online (not to mention the difficulty in locating so many of these collectibles, many of them long out of print)....
Read moreGotten some good stuff here. Mainly in the CD/Tape realm. When it comes to the vinyl though, I feel I've overpaid heavily for some stuff, which is fine to an extent, to have the album in-hand IMMEDIATELY, but when I bought a Bjork - Homogenic test press for $45 (found NM/NM on discogs for $20-$25) and a couple standard press, black wax, mayhem albums for $10-15 over discogs SEALED price, at closer to a VG/VG in-hand, I can't help but feel a little jipped. But as I've said, they have an elite CD/Tape inventory, (I mean, c'mon. I found a CD copy of Sadochismo by CBT for $9.99) maybe be weary of the pricing on some of the vinyl, especially the "rare" table with signed and LTD edition type stuff. Store credit % on trade ins is top-of-the-line as well, though. From my experience. LEAGUES better than Euclid, or Vintage Vinyl, who sit at like 15% value cash, 25% credit (and we're talking new limited press albums, in the $60-$150 range for that. No wiggle room, lol. Not 70s prog rock commons or classical, jazz, etc.) Still will keep dropping by, for sure. As it's more than just a...
Read moreThis place was a straight trip into memory lane. Huge selection of vinyl records (rock/hip hop/country & more), cassette tapes, CD's, original vintage posters and even VHS tapes. They have a couple of arcade machines in the front but then they also have a back room with more arcade machines as well as vintage toys and some newer collectible toys. They host a fun atmosphere with awesome music to keep your head bobbing. I also loved that it was kid friendly, they didn't mind my rug rats at all and a few other people also had kids while I was there, a lot of smiles were going around. The staff was super nice and more than helpful, I look forward to going back. Oh yeah, I picked up 3 albums for under $50, including the Eagles - Singles album & The Police - greatest hits album. They way they run this business, they truly deserve much respect and I wish them the best of luck so I can keep going back for...
