Velocity Climbing is setting the pace in Miami and around the country.
It's genuinely refreshing to see a gym not just listen to its members, but actively evolve based on that feedback. Velocity Climbing has done exactly that, transforming itself over the past year into what feels like the premier climbing destination in the area.
My initial experience last year felt alien and sometimes unenjoyable. Despite the impressive new facility, the routesetting was awkward and 'laddery', and the general atmosphere didn't initially seem to justify making the switch. Adding to this were negative biases I'd heard about an 'elitist' culture or monopoly attempts, making it hard to shake off those preconceived notions at first. Even though the gym looked polished, I often left feeling something crucial was missing – it simply felt lacking for me back then. Fast forward to today, and that initial sentiment couldn't be further from the truth, and here's why:
What stands out immediately now is the routesetting; once, it was my main point of critique and now is arguably one of their strongest assets. They hired a world-class setter, Danny Duran, that engages and builds up a team of setters that have consistently put up engaging, thoughtful climbs across the grades that keep you genuinely excited to come back week after week. They've clearly hit their stride, crafting sequences that challenge, inspire, and humble. I humbly stand corrected on my initial impressions.
But a gym is more than the facility, right? Well, Velocity shines brightly here too. The staff cultivates an atmosphere that is incredibly welcoming and genuinely friendly. This attentiveness extends crucially to safety; the staff exhibit extreme diligence in maintaining a secure environment. This focus is evident in both their approach to facility upkeep and their proactive safety monitoring. You'll notice there is always someone present and vigilant on the main floor, actively looking out for climbers and ensuring intended practices are followed. Beyond this crucial diligence, it's not uncommon to see these same staff members engaging with or even tying in alongside patrons during their own time, fostering a real sense of shared community that clearly prioritizes well-being alongside enjoyment. That passion permeates from the very top; seeing Ray, the owner, climbing in his own facility, clearly invested in ensuring his passion project thrives and meets his own high standards, speaks volumes about the dedication behind Velocity. (PS: Flash Night Friday is hands down the most fun I've had in a climbing gym where I was not climbing. Seriously, kudos.)
If there are "criticisms," they fall squarely into the category of "good problems to have." The setting is now so dynamic that routes change frequently. While this means there's always something new, it can occasionally be a challenge if you're deep into projecting a particularly tough climb; it might vanish before you snag the send! It's a testament to their commitment to freshness, though. Similarly, while the current fitness area is functional, it can feel a bit compact during peak hours and lacking in some of the features that other gyms have, such as a Smith Machine or a Leg Press. However, hearing directly about Ray's vision and concrete plans to expand the facility alleviates any concern. It shows clear foresight and a commitment to continuous improvement, something that I feel is worth investing into.
Velocity Climbing truly feels like the new kid on the block who listened, learned, and most importantly - delivered. This once-underdog facility has experienced a remarkable comeuppance, blossoming into a vibrant, well-run gym with a fantastic community spirit based on listening to feedback and constant improvement. Frankly, older establishments in Miami could learn a thing or two by looking at what Velocity is achieving. They're not just building a gym; they're building a dedicated climbing community, and doing it exceptionally well.
So, great work, and keep it up! Your passion is truly...
Read moreAs someone who has climbed at every single climbing gym in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area A LOT over the last 6 years. Let me break down why Velocity is like my second home.
This is definitively the most ambitious gym to come to South Florida and it shows. Providing beautiful tall walls, a talented and hard-working setting team, a super clean facility, and a really great climbing community, If you’re in the Miami area and you love climbing. It’s the spot!
The staff are great, and all super friendly passionate climbers! I always get my chalk bag, Wallet, Harness, Shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes back from the lost of found when I leave them! And after climbing and meeting with pretty much everyone on staff, I’d vouch for em all. Front desk, setting team, managers, owner. They are all out there climbing in their off hours and being just as much a part of the climbing community as the facilitators of our joy. You can tell they are passionate about being an awesome gym.
It’s a pretty new, and I think it’s just going to get better and better. They care about the experience, And they care about the community. Constantly doing things to improve and investing back into the gym. With nice lighting and solid AC, It’s a fun place to be - Especially if you’re sweaty sweaty, sweaty like me.
There is no shortage of passionate climbers of all grades. Velocities climbing community is like a big friendly family of like-minded Pebble wrestlers.
I’ve got some bias, and I spend a lot of time here. But I’ve also spent a lot of time at a lot of the other gyms and let’s be real - they all make me happy. I cherish my beginnings at Project rock when I lived in Fort Lauderdale, And The Edge Is a cornerstone of Miami’s climbing community. And Boulder Bloc houses the most passionate OG Boulder community I’ve ever had the fortune to run with.
So what is it about Velocity? It feels like it has my favorite parts from every gym together in one big beautiful facility.
As someone trying to grow their skills, the volume and variety of routes and boulder problems is a blessing. Limited only by the skin on my fingers. The setting team is SOLID, And the problem-solving Boulder community is Friendly and in it for the love of the game. They got some new volumes recently and you can see everyone’s slab game rising. And the holds in general are top-notch.
The lead wall is beautiful, A huge overhung Section usually contains some of the hardest routes in the gym. But there are plenty all across the difficulty range. And even more auto belay options On both levels.
The gym is usually nice and calm, but Summer And holidays can pull in a lot of people (the same for every gym in the area) but I have never seen it so bad that I couldn’t have a great time climbing. A large part of the bouldering is in a separate area upstairs but there is also the long Innsbrook replica wall downstairs. You won’t run out of problems unless you’re casually flashing v10+(super mega hardcore for the layman). And there’s a kilter board by the training area if you want to Queue up some 60° nightmares for a masochistic training regimen. Even our kilter board has a strong community! Don’t be afraid though - There are boulders of all grades, teaching all different skills and stretching your beta brain.
Soooooo. Yeah, Velocity is awesome! Passion meets climbing is a good motto for them
Whether you’re a local or just visiting. Velocity is great climbing! My climbing cup floweth over. This gym...
Read moreAmazing quality gym, even by Miami standards. When you walk in, it's hard to believe you're still in South Florida. The staff are super welcoming and knowledgable, going above and beyond with their generosity to share their rope with me and my partner (after a lead cert test, of course). The staff does keep a close eye and makes frequent rounds to make sure everyone is being safe, which gives peace of mind as I have seen my fair share of sketchy belaying, even on top rope. All tall walls are lead accessible and require at least a 50m rope, so you'll definitely get a chance to work on endurance. With a new gym, you'll get scraped up a bit by the extra bit of texture on the holds, but that's just the cost of doing business.
Other noteworthy features and general comments: Kilter board, campus board, hang boards, various cardio machines, weights, showers, lockers, top rope, auto belay section, speed climbing wall, bouldering with soft pads for landing, a pair of socks or flip flops to prevent bare feet on the mats (so not dog-friendly, but it's for hygiene so I respect it). Tall wall climbing grades are Yosemite-esque. When you get to 5.10 and up, they are categorized at 5.10-, 5.10, and 5.10+ (so no a-d grading). Grades are somewhat inconsistent depending on the style of climbing (vert vs. overhang), but we are also using our home gym as reference. Also, the bolt lines are a little messy, as there are just a ton of them that one climb can often look like it has several possible clips, but you do feel somewhat safer, albeit confused. Regardless, had an A+ time.
All in all, I wish we could have stayed longer! Very happy that when I go back to visit family, I don't have to skip out on any...
