About a week ago, my 3 month old son had a scheduled surgery at Driscoll Children’s. The care that the entire surgical team rendered to my son was excellent. From Dr. Koehler, to the medical, nursing and anesthesia staff, they were- are the best team! We felt safe and more at ease when they took my baby from my arms for that surgery. The OR waiting room was amazing as the older gentleman there made us fell comfortable. Surgery called in the middle of the procedure for updates and it gave me so much comfort. We were then transferred to the pediatric floor and that was a different story. I was very surprised of the nursing staff there… No one smiled, they didn’t seem happy to have us nor was I updated with the plan of care- I had to ask. The child life specialist came to our room and that moment only, I felt that someone in that floor actually cared. I did not feel that the nursing staff cared about our stay or was attentive to our needs… I had called the nurse via our call light, asking if the baby was allowed to breastfed post op. Another staff answered to say that she will ask my nurse to come by- she didn’t come by until about 40 mins later. My sons monitor kept alarming yet the day nurse didn’t come in to check why the noise. The IV pumps kept beeping after the infusion volume finished- it took a long while for someone to come in. His IV came off bcoz they failed to re-tape or secure the site once we got to the floor. I had missed dinner as I was not told of the cafeteria or when it was close. I was starving and I was breastfeeding. It was, however a big blessing that the charge RN on nights offered me so much snacks and a couple Gatorades. The sad part, I didn’t see one nurse use their stethoscope to listen to heart, lungs or bowels, etc...Being a pediatric nurse, specialty in Peds ICU, Peds ER and nursing education… I’ve always taught my nurses to treat patients as if it were their own families in that hospital bed. Educate the nervous parents/patients, treat with pride and care, and become the face of the whole team, unit, and the entire hospital- because what we do should reflect the mission and vision of the organization. I wished to have had a better experience, especially at this children’s hospital. There’s definitely room for much improvement. I still want to Thank Driscoll for having us as ultimately, my son had a good...
Read moreMy experience at the pediatric ER was absolutely awful, and I would never return. I’m not from this area and chose this facility based on a search for pediatric care, but I deeply regret it.
Upon arrival, the triage nurse was sitting in a room, staring out the window, seemingly oblivious to the patients waiting. After a long wait, we were finally called in, but the nurse cut me off several times while I was trying to explain my child's symptoms.
Once in the exam room, I encountered a noisy environment with multiple staff members standing around at the desk, which made it difficult to focus. I had to repeat my child's history and symptoms to several different people, including a nurse who came in and immediately asked for the same information. It felt like no one was communicating with each other.
When the physician entered, I was taken aback by his rude attitude. With my background in emergency medicine, I found his approach to be unprofessional. He quickly dismissed my concerns, stating my child sounded fine. However, a respiratory therapist later assessed my child and noted he sounded “coarse and wheezy,” which contradicted the doctor's earlier statement.
Adding to my frustration, I informed the physician that my child had just one morning left on a 10-day course of antibiotics for an ear infection. He casually said, “His ears are not infected. He wouldn’t need antibiotics, so just stop them. This happens with kids.” This was concerning since my child was still undergoing treatment, and I felt completely disregarded.
During the visit, I had to step out briefly to take my 2.5-year-old to the restroom. Despite the chaos, I found it difficult to get help finding the bathroom, which was frustrating while managing a 6-month-old and a toddler.
Finally, the monitoring equipment was alarming frequently. The staff silenced the alarms outside the room, even though my child's heart rate was at 190, and the physician entered, saw the good waveform on the oxygen saturation and heart rate, and just turned the monitor off.
This was the worst experience I’ve ever had in a medical setting. I understand how busy and demanding an ER can be, but there was a severe lack of care and attention to patients. I cannot recommend this facility, especially for pediatric...
