my girlfriend and i are very spiritual people. we have spent plenty day offs together traveling to different crystal shops in towns all over in illinois. we have been to plenty of different shops in bloomington, pontiac, peoria, champaign, and springfield together. i have been a customer at Rocky Mudds for 11 years now but after moving, i haven’t been back in a few years. i have been telling my girlfriend about rocky mudds for months now and how it was where i bought my first crystal and bowl. i was so excited to bring her and literally talked about it all the time. i couldn’t wait to bring her to the first ever metaphysical store i ever went to, and since i was a teenager. From the moment we walked in the vibes were off. we go to crystal shops often and something felt different. not to mention, we were followed around and watched the whole entire time. we weren’t even allowed to go to the back room real quick to check the name of a new crystal we picked out alone. we were escorted. My girlfriend spent a little bit of time picking from two different bracelets that she couldn’t pick between. They both had price tags on them that said $8. she chose between the two bracelets and we both picked up a few over priced crystals/selenite bowls and went to check out. I paid for all of my items and waited at the register for my girlfriend to finishing paying for her items. we noticed that she was charged $12 for the bracelet, which we both know was supposed to be an $8 bracelet. When brought to the managers attention she said that there wasn’t a tag on it, (there was, she removed it) and if the bracelets don’t have tags on it, they are $12. whatever we didn’t fight it, we paid $12 and tried to leave. but then my girlfriend was approached by someone who claimed to be a manager saying that she needed ME to empty out my pockets because her co worker allegedly saw me steal a labradorite palm stone. I gladly took everything out of my right pocket and was rudely told that it was my other pocket. I took my car keys out of my pocket and that was everything in there. No apology, nothing. i have been a loyal customer for a decade now and have always recommend this store to people. We left and got out to the car but the whole situation didn’t sit right with us and my girlfriend went back inside and asked to return all of her items. she was told she could only get store credit. We don’t want store credit, we want our money back after you accused us to be thieves. However, she was able to get a cash refund for the bracelet since there was an issue with the price. Interesting. very suspicious. red flag. It has been almost six hours since we left this store and my energy has been very low ever since. after reading other very similar reviews from other people I honestly feel sick to my stomach. I don’t know what happened to this place but what went to my favorite crystal shop to tell people about went to somewhere I will never go back to after today. The real spiritual people can see right threw your fake spiritual front and know that you’re only in the business to make money and literally charge people triple the price than stores like Rock, Soul, Love in Bloomington and Morris, Artworks by Nature in Peoria, and Whispering Wind in Pontiac. Spend your money somewhere where they actually care their crystals and the amazing benefits that can come from them and don’t just want to make a quick buck. I already cleansed the crystals I purchased today to remove the awful energies from this place and hopefully they will fit into my collection well. Hope you’re having a good day and we look forward to hearing back...
Read moreI've been going to spiritual shops for about fifteen years now. There are certain things I look for and have come to expect at stores like this.
One, I look for practicality. How likely am I to find something in the store that I can realistically use in my practice? Rocky Mudds checks off easily in this category. I have left the store with so many useful and practical items that I have just recently used in rituals, etc. Extra points for having some non-spiritual items I could use as well.
Two, I look for organization. Can I mostly find what I am looking for without needing to ask for help? Now, some might argue that this is where Rocky Mudds falls flat, but take into consideration, occult stores are few and far in between, so if you're going to open one, especially in rural IL, you need to make sure you have lots of everything. Rocky Mudds does indeed have lots of everything and they make use of the space they have to try and make it all work, and for the most part, it does work. All the incense is in one spot, the daggers/athames are in another, stones and books are located near the back, etc. However, I will say if they dropped some of the less looked at and purchased items (some of the shirts, skirts, etc), they could free up some walking room and prevent accidental elbow bumps.
And three, I look for personable employees/shop keepers. Rocky Mudds has quite a few more employees present than most other occult stores I have visited mainly due to the size of the store (it's pretty huge). And each interaction with them has been pleasant and overall helpful. Many of them are upfront about what they know and do not know. And if they don't know something, they will try their best to find an answer for you. Though some are put off by this, I'd rather have someone honestly tell me they don't know than to lie to me. I've also read many complaints about the "stalking" but it really isn't that bad (or it has improved since before I've shopped here). There is certainly a fine line between keeping an eye on inventory vs stalking your customers, but I personally never felt discomfort. These are easy things to steal, I get it.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this shop to anyone looking for spiritual items including crystals, incense/holders, and tarot cards. They only lose one star due to the cramped aisles, but otherwise, I highly...
Read moreI never write reviews, but felt compelled to after repeatedly bizarre service at Rocky Mudds.
I'd like to start off by saying that the employees make me feel extremely uncomfortable while shopping. They follow you around and watch you like a hawk everywhere you go. I've spent a lot of money here over the years, and every time I go, they make me feel like I am fixing to steal something. I had one employee nearly run across the shop to stand by me (like RIGHT next to me) while I was looking at flourite crystals. This is by far the worst part of this shop, and one that makes me not want to come back. Its obnoxious and disrespectful to the loyal customer base that spends their hard earned money at your shop.
While they do have a variety of interesting items that aren't often found elsewhere, they shop is quite messy and chaotic. Most of their stone jewelry is scattered throughout the store and its pretty disorganized. The owner seemed like he didn't really know where anything was, just kind of aimlessly walked around when I was looking for a specific type of candle holder. Maybe if you organized your store, you wouldnt have to follow people around so much?!
I've also found that they are really overpriced and sometimes throw prices out without rhyme or reason. I went into the new crystal shop, which had a lot of cool items, but many were not marked. The employee was throwing out random prices and trying to convince me that "People jump on stuff like that". I mean, I don't mind splurging a bit on a stone I really want, but I think the prices should be marked, so the customer knows they are paying a fair price for the piece. Not just a random number decided at that moment.
One last thing, their male employees are pretty creepy. Always touching your shoulders and standing too close. My sister had one of the employees come up to "examine" a stone, and stood so close to her his belly was on her arm.
Get it together, guys. You're shop is pretty cute and all, but if you don't stop with the crazed customer stalking, you'll lose a lot...
