Convenience factor, the government bridge helps with my daily commutes, MOST days. Let me emphasize MOST. On the days it hinders my commutes, the government bridge sucks a bunch. For that reason, it gets 4 stars for helpfulness most days, and a one star deduction for being a giant pain in my a$$ the other days. Today is one of those seldom days, prompting me to write such a scathing review. The bridge has some cool history factors also, which gives me the reasoning to stick with my 4 stars. 1st bridge accross the mississippi, cool factor indeed. Abraham Lincoln was counsel to the railroad when a disgruntled steam boat destroyed the original, cool factor fosho!

Of time and the River! I know, Wolfe didn't reference that book title to the mighty river, but I can't stop think about it, when writing this. This is one of many in the mighty river control and operated by the Corp. This would be one of the many equivalent to the modern Panama canal. One upon a time, this mighty was the blood vain and the core of transportation of the nation.

For some reason I feel safer on this old bridge than the other choices in the Quad Cities. Built to last, over 120 years old, the quintessential Mississippi River experience sitting watching the swing span open and a barge pass through.

I've lived in the Quad Cities for a LONG time and the Government bridge has never failed! Driving from Davenport to Rock Island or from Rock Island to Davenport, it's a smooth crossing. Caution, though, as sometimes the swing span is turned to allow barges through the locks. If the span is turned, you need some extra speed to jump the gap! There's also a bike and pedestrian path on the side of the bridge. I do NOT recommend trying to jump on foot or bicycle while the span is turned. In the winter, this area is good for watching eagles fishing on the open water, even though they catch mostly carp so it's not very...

I love this bridge. The first bridge that crossed the Mississippi River 155 years ago. As a child i was aftaid of the railroad tracks on the upper part of the bridge. The sound was load and the bridge shook. I did not care for the 155 yr old bridge. The other day i hit the rdd light where the bridge opened so the barge could come through. I enjoyed the view and saw 2 eagles near the...
