Decatur Athletic Club — Attraction in Decatur

Referred by a friend, started a trial period before I decided to join. Upon starting my membership it appeared that the place was under renovation.

STAFF: Staff there vary, there is a young man there more concerned with his hair then the customer. Two girls that work there are always courteous. One is a short Latina and one is an officer in the Army reserves. Chris is a good guy, however seems distracted from his job at times. The owner is a good guy, however some days will ignore you to walk past to converse with someone else.

JUICE BAR: Great concept however most employees are lost when making the smoothies. One in particular is a thin redhead, poor thing is lost when requesting a smoothie. If and when they have ice.

EQUIPMENT: Functions... however I had to bring my own tools in one day to tighten up the bolts so I could continue my workout.

RESTROOMS: one toilet; two urinals, two showers, the only sitting area is an old leather couch that stays cluttered with personal belongings. Be careful when entering the men’s room, the shower leaks water and water sits at the entrance to the restroom. Sometimes there is a sign up stating slippery floor. When making the staff aware of the issue it did not seem to be the priority of the staff to fix the issue, however the Latina girl was apologetic and concerned.

MEMBERS: There is a strong core of folks that are the everyday crowd. A few of them are characters. One lives in his glory days of supposedly being Mr. Alabama, while another tries to lift weights well out of his range, thus slamming the weight and causing issues with the equipment. He moves the equipment in very small range of motion and is very sarcastic when approached.

CLEANLINESS: The gym seems to have a person that maintains the cleanliness of the facility.

BILLING: Some stress concerns of termination of membership and issues with being billed months after. I pray that this is not an issue for me going forward. If so my banking institution will be addressing any and all concerns.

Overall I would recommend this establishment for the simple reason that it is open 24/7 . However there are better facilities available in the area. These are just my views and opinions, one must make their own conclusions. I however will not be returning even if I return...

My assessment (1 to 10, ten being best):

GYM CONDITION (not including equipment) - 5; overall not bad nor exceptional. Facility was generally clean. The locker room (men's) wasn't too bad, typical "cleanliness" of other locker rooms I've seen for this price point. Didn't check the condition of the lockers.

STAFF - 9; very helpful and polite. Didn't have a whole lot of interaction tho...

RANGE OF THE EQUIPMENT - 8; I'd wager 90% of the people needing to get a workout are going to have everything they'd need to work every area of the body. A lot of treadmills

CONDITION OF THE EQUIPMENT - 1.5; I'd say this is the drawback of this location. It is actually laughable how many pieces of equipment are in the condition they're in. For example, the ONLY leg extension machine padding looks to be completely warn to the metal in the areas where your legs rest. Also the torso twist machine has the exact thing happening. I had to ask for towels to protect my legs. Das no bueno!! There are a lot of benches/pads that need replacing; a lot of the weights/plates are in poor condition; and the equipment needs to have maintenance (unevenness on the floor makes it wobbly, loud squeaking, etc.).

VALUE - 7; You'll pay around 2-3 times as much in a big city for the same range/types of equipment. If the equipment condition were better I'd give this a 9/10 score. As stated you COULD get a serious workout in at this facility. However, it is hampered by the condition of the equipment...

CLOSING THOUGHTS - next time I'm in the area this location will likely not be my first choice. The condition of the equipment needs to be addressed pronto!!

Oh... and THERE'S NO WATER FOUNTAIN!! How do you not have a water...

Decided to stop in yesterday. There’s no water fountain. They said they were getting it fixed soon but another review on here said they told them the same thing. That review was left 8 months ago. Equipment is not in good shape. The locker room has one toilet and 2 places to sit. No free trial period for membership. The ceiling on the basketball court is too low to shoot long shots. I couldn’t use the court anyways unless I paid for a more expensive membership. I stood at the counter for about 10 minutes before I was acknowledged by anyone. 3 workers were within 10 yards of me. And if that’s not enough my co worker says they billed his account for almost a year after his membership ended and he...
