A few years ago I developed DePuytren’s Contraction, which is a gene-based disorder that Can afflict people of Norwegian descent. Prior to this, as a person with mainly Western European ancestry, I’d always figured I was probably descended somewhere and somewhen from Vikings, but I knew nothing specific as to whether this was even true. This is ironic, because I’ve lived near Decorah for many years, and the area around Decorah is populated by many people of Norwegian ancestry. So, after over 20 years of shopping in Decorah, I never visited Vesterheim until recently. I was rereading “Kristen Lavransdottir” at the time, and the book was decorated with beautiful Rosemulling, attributed to a design from Vesterheim! And yes, I found the design! There were many many examples of traditional Norwegian artistry besides a great number of pieces decorated with rosemulling . (But if you go there, check out the refrigerator!). There were numerous pieces of furniture made by Norwegians brought over from Norway and made here in Iowa which show intricately prescinde and beautiful word carving. There are items shown that Norwegians used in everyday life. The stairway to upper levels is dominated with a boat used by Norwegian immigrants to come to America . If one didn’t already suspect that Norwegians are stoic and brave, try imagining crossing the Atlantic with your family and a few other families in what seems to be a fairly small boat. Upon entering the displays, one passes through a rebuilt typical Norwegian house, furnished and decorated in the traditional manner. I was fortunate that day, because a group of various string players, including a dulcimer-type of instrument, performing. There is more and more I could write about Vesterheim, but for now, this is enough. I hope I still have photos from my visit to share.

I'm not a huge museum fan but was blown away by this one. It is so well organized, the displays exceptionally well done and overall it was very engaging. There's an entire log cabin in here, and a handmade boat that crossed the Atlantic. The whole museum is well worth a visit and the people there and at the museum store we're very friendly. Also loved the art gallery part.

What a fantastic, unique museum! The place was quite empty as we explored on a Saturday afternoon, which is a shame, as it is loaded with treasures and insights. I loved everything about this place. The artwork is amazing, the furniture gorgeous. Everywhere you look, there's information about the Norwegian-American experience, all presented in an accessible, fascinating way.

A nice place if you're interested in learning the Nordic history of the area. Many programs available for families and children. They've also created a beautiful garden area behind the museum, where you can walk and learn about ancient Norwegian settlements. The new Vesterheim Commons building is also getting close to opening.

This is a wonderful museum. I learned so much about Norwegian immigrants and their history. The buildings that have been taken apart and moved to Decorah are amazing. I highly recommend taking one of the classes. I did kroting and have a lovely piece of artwork to always remind me of this special place.

Impressive museum and so many talented artists and craftsmen. Well worth the visit to the museum and the gift shop for unique items. Where else can you get a handmade silver crown for your Scandinavian princess or watch a Viking battle demonstration?
