Tl;dr: Talking Hairs is a very comfortable place for people that feel like they have inexplicable issues at large chains and I can wholeheartedly recommend this place.
After finding Talking Hairs through a scarysymptoms.com article via web search, I decided to give it a try because I was wondering if I was having some sort of issue with the environment or something at the usual large chain despite only having ADHD (I haven’t gotten tested for autism, but I do suspect having it). I didn't have the usual mild anxiety when Demi welcomed me into the studio or when I was in the chair, and even though I felt slightly awkward when I explained what I'd like to have Demi do to my hair, it felt a lot more vague in comparison to my previous experiences.
For once I was actually comfortable getting my hair trimmed, and being able to actually converse with Demi about various things only made the experience better, as I've only ever experienced awkward silence at the other place. While it is pricier than I'm used to, I feel that it is worth it for the service I received, and I’m glad that getting my hair trimmed is no longer something I have to dread.
Side notes: I wasn't aware that Talking Hairs is within Salons by JC because I missed the info on the appointment-making site (I was a little more concerned about parking at the time), and I didn't look at the about section in the Google Maps listing ahead of time either, so this is entirely my fault. Also, the entrance to the parking garage is accessible via the alleyway on eastbound Evans Avenue just east of University Boulevard and is the second entrance on the right in the alleyway (the first right is parking for...
Read moreMy kiddo and I were in need of haircuts, but as autistic folks with sensory concerns, we tend to gravitate away from bigger, noisy and unpredictable salons. As a result of this, I’ve had a lot of negative experiences having my hair cut and colored over the years. Demi turned that experience right around for us! The salon is a small space and thoroughly insulated so we didn’t have any issues with loud blow dryers, smells, or chatter. There are plenty of fidget options, low sensory lighting, as well as shampoo and styling products without artificial fragrance. My kiddo was allowed to be as weird as they wanted and felt so safe being able to unmask in front of someone who, just a few minutes before, was a complete stranger to us. Demi is very knowledgeable about hair, friendly, and did an amazing job on both of our haircuts. A huge plus is she didn’t try to talk me into covering my gray hair like most other stylists tend to do. I felt like I had autonomy and agency in her space, and so did my kiddo. We’ll be back and will send all of our neurospicy friends to Talking Hairs, too. Thanks so much for this invaluable experience. You are such a valuable resource for the...
Read moreRUINED MY HAIR. I was really excited to support a queer and neurodivergent hair stylist in Denver but was so disappointed in the result. I asked for long shaggy layers and chocolate brown highlights. I let Demi know that I was getting married in 2 months and had spent the last 2 years growing my hair out for the wedding. I explicitly stated that I did not want to lose a lot of length. Demi gave me a horrible, choppy mullet with streaky yellow highlights that weren't evenly placed. I had to pay a different stylist to fix it, lost all the length on my hair, and have to spend more money on extensions for my wedding. Demi did give me a refund after the fact but reprimanded me for asking for the refund and not showing pictures at the salon. Demi did not ask to see reference photos on the day in the salon. I would...
