Hotel Shenanigans and Downtime on Large Family Vacation At Hotel Fort Des, Moines in Des Moines, Iowa!

The hotel Fort Des Moines is absolutely stunning. It is so well balanced with the nastalgia of the early 1900s and the current modern amenities. A hidden speakeasy in the basement was definitely a highlight as well. #nastalgia #1900s #hotels #speakeasy #datenight

I stayed at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in the 1980s when they didn't even have air conditioning. I remember how beat up everything was and the Woodwork just didn't do justice because of all the scars of use. This company has completely renovated the hotel and turned it into something that is easily five stars. If I could I would give it 10 Stars. I'm posting photos of multiple Suites. Every step in this hotel is a piece of History. The lobby is immaculate especially the huge wood fluted columns. It's worth staying here for just one night just to enjoy the Ambiance and the history of Des Moines. And yes being a hotel that went through prohibition, it had a speakeasy. Go into the bar and ask them about it. It probably isn't ready for presentation at the time of this posting but will be. Just spend one night at this hotel if you like history. I am a former vice president of the Des Moines Historical Society. I know a little bit about history. I know this review is long and may look like a schill review. It is not. This is my sincere thoughts on the renovation of one of Des Moines most historic properties.

location looks beautiful as it was recently renovated, rooms are modern while still keeping the classic themes that used to make this hotel worthy of dignitaries. In fact they have carpet showing all the famous people who’ve stayed here. that is the end of the positive experience, because the people who work here do not care. stayed here aug 2022 and didn’t have the room cleaned/new towels during a weeklong stay. no parking available other than valet and where we parked in the Nationwide garage that was suggested to us the completely unnecessary security guards harassed us. It’s a shame such a nice place has to be run so badly. I have been to this hotel many times in my life for conferences or events and I was excited to see how it has been redone, so the stay was nostalgic for me but just not up to par compared to other luxury style hotels in terms of service. they don’t keep anything stocked in hotel shop and the effort level is less than 2 stars (had to wait hours even just ordering towels and had to call twice for them). Airbnb or another downtown hotel is a better choice at this point.

Hotel Fort Des Moines is an overwhelming structure in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa. It is a beacon of foresight and planning for 20th-century hotel construction. Since its opening in the summer of 1919, this historic hotel has welcomed a myriad of notable people, including 13 U.S. Presidents from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama, as well as Charles Lindbergh and Helen Keller. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and the hotel's architecture was an absolute first of its time. Designed by Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson, the building was built with classical columns. To have columns was opulent. Hotel Fort Des Moines was at the forefront of innovation. It had many firsts… It was the first hotel west of the Mississippi River to offer private bathrooms. It was the first hotel in North America to feature a car lift. This hotel revolutionized the hospitality industry in its time. I loved my stay. This hotel is gorgeous. I’m so glad it has been perfectly preserved!
