South Union Bread Cafe — Restaurant in Des Moines

I love this place! The Cajun Chicken special on Wednesdays is by far my favorite item in the menu! Only reason I’m not giving it five stars is because recently, I’ve noticed they don’t have it available to order online. When I call to place my lunch order, nobody answers the phone. They’re a great place to eat, so there’s always a line but I don’t have the time on my lunch to wait in it. It’s a bit disappointing that I’ve not been able to order the Wednesday special for awhile now because of these issues. Hope someone there sees the review and can work on getting that sorted out. I love South Union, just wish I had the ability to order ahead like I used to.

I have been going to South Union since it was by the YWCA (when we would eat bread scraps by the bag full). Favorite spot, always bring people here who are visiting, make a point to have lunch every time I'm down town. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BREAD?! The last couple of times I've been I've assumed it was an off day or there was an issue with the bake, but it seems that the beautiful, pillowy, soft garlic focaccia is now flat, dry and minimally garlicky. I know the bread still exists (I just go get it at Gateway now), but I can't believe that they switched the recipe or whatever they did. The meat/cheese is still great quality, but the bread is a total miss and makes it hard to consider it as a lunch option any more. Just be warned this is not the South Union so many of us knew...

Worst cashier ever! Today, my colleague and I went to lunch at South Union and were greeted by a woman who told us tersely there was no cajun tuna. After we ordered different items, I said twice, we would like water glasses. No reply by the young clerk. Finally, I grabbed a glass and said, we just want water. Do you have another glass? No response. She billed my credit card and when I said, this is just for water, she replied, "Well, that would have been nice to know." I told her rather directly, I had mentioned this three times. She told me to grab chips. I don't eat chips, but since she made no effort to refund my money, I took a bag. I will give them away. If I could have awarded no stars to this young woman,...
