I attended an event yesterday at Voices Studio in Dubuque that spotlighted African-American artists, and I was genuinely moved. Having recently relocated to Galena from the Chicago metro area, I had no idea this space even existed—what a beautiful surprise.
Whoever is behind Voices Studio clearly cares deeply about the community. They’re not just enhancing the physical space (which, by the way, is stunning), but also enriching it culturally—bringing in diverse voices and perspectives that resonate on so many levels.
I grew up in Park Forest, one of the first suburban communities in the Chicago area to welcome African-American families. It was a place of intentional inclusion, even inspiring Norman Rockwell’s New Kids on the Block. Last night’s event brought me right back to that feeling—of being surrounded by art, culture, and a celebration of diversity.
