The Bennett Place Historic Site is a must visit for locals and tourists alike. The historical significance of the location is not something that is really taught in schools, at least in New York, so it was a very informative visit for me. It was amazing to see so many historical artifacts inside the exhibit and they were different from what was at the History Museum in Raleigh, so I recommend a visit to both places for those interested in history. It has a nice little gift shop with unique items that are all well priced. The outside lawns are well kept and it’s a beautiful place to go for a walk, to bring your dog or even have a picnic.
For me, the best thing about it was the worker who was there on the day I went. We spoke for hours about the history of the site as well as the history of North Carolina and the south. It was just a very informative and engaging talk with someone who had a lot of knowledge and was also interested in talking about the history of where I’m from. I could not recommend visiting this place enough and also want to encourage people to engage with the staff and volunteers; you’ll get a lot more out of the...
Read moreAdults, if you haven't checked this place out, you should. It doesn't take very long and is definitely worth the time. It does a good job at pointing out that there were more similarities than differences with the people that fought the war and, at least the presentation I saw, presents the content without any political spin.
I went here with my daughter's school and enjoyed it and learned a bit. I remember going when I was about my daughter's age and it was interesting seeing it with adult eyes. I remember virtually nothing about my first trip, a shock to no one, but this trip I picked up some Civil War facts that I didn't know.
The demonstration and talk by the Civil War reenactment soldiers was especially good. They gave a quite interesting and detailed, but still kid friendly, account of what life might have been like for civil war soldiers. It was interesting to hear details about the uniform and gear they carried, their uses, and how they changed...
Read moreOur guide, was very knowledgeable. When I told him we had ancestors that were in Sherman's army at the time of the surrender, he looked up the units in a book and told us that they would have been camped at Raleigh at the time and that only the Calvary were with him that day. He knew a lot of "side stories" from being local and knowing other families and their family lore and remembrances of the day. It was very emotional for me standing where such a time in history had occurred. I lost several great uncles in the battle for emancipation. One of the grandfathers who would have been waiting in Raleigh had lost a brother and four brother-in-laws throughout the five years of war. He came home with physical ailments and injuries that pursued him the rest of his life. It was a great stop on our vacation. I look forward to seeing more places in NC. I want to clarify that it cost $1,00 to view the house and barns....
