Enid Railroad Museum — Attraction in Enid

We went to this railroad museum today and discovered a true treasure! First, this is one of the best museums I have ever visited! It is in an old freight station that was renovated to be a museum. It is clean, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, the collections are well organized and displayed in an appealing way. Second, this museum is visionary. They do more than display stuff, they attempt to make their city a better place. They have a caboose that is set up for kids to come and read in! They have a dining car that they use for murder mysteries, etc. they have some fantastic model train displays. They have an old steam engine you can climb up in! There is way more great stuff! Third, this museum is a labor of love to the gentleman who started it: “Watermelon” Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a train conductor after he served in the Navy in WW2. One of the best railroad museums we have seen and we have visited major ones such as the National Museum in York England, the RR Museum of Pennsylvania, and the California State Railroad Museum. The rolling stock is impressive but it is the amazing collections of signs, uniform buttons, lanterns, and photos inside the main building that has us coming back to visit when we are in the area. MUST VISIT. The vast railroad collection of memorabilia is absolutely mind-blowing within the walls of the old depot. Watermelon is 98 years old and still playing with the model railroad layouts. AMAZING! He walked us around the entire facility giving history and factual detail on all the old railroads. Enjoyed all the cabooses and steam engine outside in the yard as well.
