The hike starts on the end of the parking lot near the restrooms. It is a slight downhill or flat for about the first mile with little shade following the road. It then turn a at from the road into a shaded wood area for the last 0.5 to 0.7 miles (uphill but not steep) to the lake. It's beautiful here and you will probably find other r hikers and campers hanging out here and swimming. To hike up to the notch, hear reall right around the lake and the trail will wrap around then start to climb the hill. This is the steepest part of the trail another 1.5 miles to the top of the ridge, again with very little shade. Up at the notch, the view back down to the lake is post card beautiful. You can also see that ver the other side of the ridge and see the path continues left to Crystal Lakes where you can get good views of Crystal Mountain or branch off north from this tail for those wanting to...

A tip: There are no specific signs for the Sheep Lake Trail, but you'll find it by following the Pacific Crest trail marker, which runs alongside the highway.

In a nutshell, it was a decent hike and camping experience at Sheep Lake Trail, with convenient parking and manageable terrain for...
Read moreGreat hike with a lovely view for most of the trip. The lake itself is actually a bit smallish. So don't let photos people post fool you. But it is clear and cool. Super refreshing for a dip. The best view of the lake is as you home up to Sourdough Gap though. This part of the hike is the steepest bit. And your doing switchbacks up the side of the mountain to the gap. But the view from the top is phenomenal!
Go early in the morning to beat the crowds. I live 2 and a half house away and didn get in till 9am. Which was a little late. Parking was almost full. By the time I left around noon, the place was filling up and the hike was freaking hot with the...
