Despite what a number of other reviews indicated, I thought the pit toilets weren’t unusually bad here (with that said, yes, they are pit toilets, so yes, it will smell inside). I wonder if timing could be a factor. Also, note that the toilets are very dark inside unless the sun is overhead (something to note for morning visitors, at least).
This was also a good place to park for the Naches Peak Loop trail. It has many picnic tables and is close to the lake (but not so close that mosquitoes were a big concern for us).
I highly recommend the trail in clockwise order for the consistent views of Mt Rainier. As it is mid July, there are still some small stretches of snow through the trail, as well as a little mud and tiny stream crossings. Poles are recommended for the snow, although we managed without. The path is moderate and wasn’t particularly steep anywhere. It took our family of 4 about 3 hours to finish. The kids did complain a bit about bugs on the trail. Read morePark here, hit the compostable toilets (i prefer finding a private spot in the forrest 😉)and follow the few shallow steps into the meadow that surrounds Tipsoo Lake. Super crowded on weekends. I arrived around 3pm on a warm fall Saturday afternoon, but nabbed a parking spot right away. people dont stay here too long, so getting a spot within a few minutes shouldn't be an issue.
Tipsoo Lake does not disappoint. the drive there is spectacular, and the views are incredible. there's often wind during the day so the lake is usually on glass-like and reflective at sunrise and sunset.
i hung out for the afternoon and then came back for the amazing sunset.
