When it comes to Excelsior Springs, this is by far the heart of the city: in many ways it embodies the history and soul of its residents and reason Excelsior exists.
I won't go into the historic details behind the building (that is for you to come see and experience first-hand), however I will say this $1,000,000 Depression Era investment is something to behold in person. Styled in the period Art Deco theme adorned with the water gods into its limestone, it was the center-piece of the city where one could come and enjoy the many "healing waters" of Excelsior Springs.
In addition to having water therapies and even an indoor pool, sitting upon its crown is the Water Bar. I have been here many times since the early 1980s and have got to enjoy these amenities. The Water Bar is something that really needs to be experienced, and I highly recommend it.
They have within a museum that shows the various therapies used in it's glory days; items that are uniquely rare to see first-hand these days, and gives a good glimpse on what the Hall was really about.
Even tho the building doubles for city offices, it is open to the public and worth the exploration and taking in a one of a kind experience when visiting downtown Excelsior...
Read moreThe building was long ago converted into city hall and while the structure is still there, you have no access to the real historic portions, including the pool and the large water bar (the cool-looking room in the photos), which has been mothballed and is falling into disrepair. You can see it in it's dilapidated condition from the second floor balcony.
The city hall workers seem put out by guests in the building (so sorry we went out of our way to visit), there is no signage leading you to a small, sad museum on the second floor, and the city doesn't seem to care about the history that made it a destination many decades ago.
Maybe worth stopping by if you're that interested in history and are already planning a trip through town, but otherwise...
Read moreKind of a disappointing place. A very small Museum. You can tell from the building that this used to be a very luxurious place in the past. Right now it is mostly a city hall and municipal offices. the main room that is the Hall of waters is still kind of need to look at, you can tell it was very fancy and it's day. I suppose there isn't enough traffic anymore to keep this place as nice as it should be. The bottom is completely blocked off from access. Apparently two stories down there's an old pool that hasn't been used in over 25 years. It must have been very luxurious and it's day also. Really not much to look at here, but it is...
