It makes me sad to say this, but this mall is awful.
There are some good stores! (Warranting the two stars!)
BUT...
It's FILTHY The mall hallways, bathrooms & food court is filthy!! We left the mall after attempting two bathrooms. They were covered in grime. If you didn't enter there sick, you'll probably leave sick! It is very very gross. The food court is so unsanitary! I'm surprised regulations have not been done, it's that gross. (If you read my reviews I don't think I've ever mentioned a business being filthy out of all my reviews.)
It's NOT SAFE! There are shootings that happen in the mall and in the parking lot. Many cars have been broken into in the parking lot. I don't feel comfortable going alone and i used to work at genesee valley when i was 16 and i went there alone daily! That was many years ago. I used to love this mall so much. Lot of fun memories. That will never be the case here unless they get some proper safety regulations. I actually suggest security with metal detectors like any amusement park would do. More security especially parking lot security. That will at least deter most people looking for trouble. Hopefully bring businesses back and a nice family atmosphere.
2 DINING CHOICES Yup only 2. No more pizza place or Subway or anywhere else.
Rude Macy's Staff Started going to Ulta because the staff at Macy's is just chatting it up and ignoring the existance of their customers in the perfume area at least. I stood there for a few minutes waiting for one of them to treat me like I exist before I decided I won't be back.
I miss the Genesee Valley I grew up with. If you go upstairs, this mall looks like a dystopian, post-apocolyptic mall, and not in a unique, fun way. In a filthy, uninhabited...
Read moreGenesee Valley is a shell of its former self. Basically, it is now a mega-sized version of Courtland Center. Stores are continuing to close at a fairly fast rate, and at least 70 percent of the mall is vacant as of summer 2025. Macy's, Zumiez, Rue 21, Torrid, and Auntie Anne's were among the latest tenants to exit. It is now down to about 25 stores with JCPenney being the only major anchor store left. The food court on the upper floor of the atrium is now completely gone, and the escalators and elevator to the upstairs level are permanently blocked off. At one instance, I could easily overhear another woman on the phone saying something along the lines of, "This is the saddest mall ever, there's like nothing here."
It is also unsafe. While I was down the hallway in the JCPenney wing where the restrooms, security office, and main mall office were located, I managed to peek through the window of the door of the security office and there was one lone man (no uniform) sitting at the front desk playing on his phone and not watching a single security camera.
Do not waste your time. Drive the extra distance to Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills or Somerset Collection in Troy instead. (Both of those are much safer.) I remember this place booming about 20 years ago when I first started college; it was the go-to place to shop and hook up with friends. Now, it is just sad. I fully expect it to be completely closed by 2030, possibly a bit earlier.
(NOTE: This review has been edited and updated as of July 2025. I have changed my rating from four stars...
Read moreThe mall is definitely different than from when I was a kid. A lot less stores to look at. Not as clean as it once was (the bathroom I went into was atrociously dirty). Two of the bigger stores (JC Penny and Macy's) Barnes and Nobles outside. There was only one option in the food court (there is supposed to be a coney island that was reopened, but it was not open, even though it was in the correct time, so I don't know if it is shut down again or not). I know a lot of people use the Planet Fitness. I realize many malls are dying. It would be nice to see if it could bounce back. Edit: OF course with all the water main breaks, it is hard to even use it for the Planet Fitness. I might have to try to change the location when I can. It sucks to be paying money for something I cannot use. It would be nice if they filled in some of the potholes as well, some of those suckers are horrendous. On 2/27/24, the power goes out, at least on that wing, which means Planet Fitness had to close as well. The Valley should be forced to refund all the people who have memberships and cannot use them because of all of the problems. And what about the people who are paying rent to stores? The people who are not getting paid because the mall has to keep closing? Someone should be held financially...
