SLOW DOWN AND SEE!
If you like Florida history, this is a must stop while in Homosassa.
"The park contains remnants of the once-thriving 5,100-acre sugar plantation: a 40-foot limestone masonry chimney, iron gears and a cane press. The steam-driven mill operated from 1851 to 1864 and served as a supplier of sugar products for Southern troops during the Civil War," (Florida State Park).
There are interesting little details to see at this outside exhibit that are worth slowing down to see.
Parking is across the street. Be careful, this road can be busy at times. The restrooms were closed -- which was disappointing to many weary travelers.
The small woodland park, by the parking lot, is charming with Oak and Cypress trees being hugged by fascinating twisting grape vines.
A picnic pavilion and tables was a welcome place to rest and enjoy a snack, while being refreshed by a cool breeze.

Read moreThe Yulee Sugar Mill was once used to make sugar crystals and molasses. It is a historical site with ruins that are worth a visit if you are passing by. The “park” itself is very small yet the ruins are really are quite interesting and make for good photographs. There is a pavilion with plenty if benches by the parking lot (adjacent to ruins). The mill unfortunately has the tarnish of slavery in its past. A commemorative plaque would be a nice edition for this site.
Things to consider:
Small road with fast traffic: the parking requires you to park on the other side of the road and use a painted crosswalk. There is 175 year’s plus of history here and a direct relationship to Cedar key just up the coast along the...
Read moreVery cool historic place. Parking lot and picnic pavilion with grill and restrooms on one side of the road, the remains of the mill on the other. There are no park rangers on site and no gates. Don't go expecting to be wow'ed. The are signs that tell one about the sugar process and about the owner, but some signs are missing. It would also have been nice to have a map of the plantation. The remains of the mill are very cool to look at. If you are in the area and like historic sites I'd recommend it as it only takes maybe 10 minutes to look around and...
