For the most part was extremely disappointed. Only do the Rainforest Pyramid.
The Discovery pyramid only has a kid-focused underwater adventure theme interactive movie experience and upstairs is just one science exhibit of nothing fancy; this visit it was music and acoustics. Was a staggering $34 for 2 tickets. Would've liked to ask someone more info before buying but there's just a row of kiosks to take your ticket. Not like a Natural Museum or Perot Museum in Dallas at all.
The aquarium was fine, but it was too easy to get through briskly. I think the walking areas might've been too wide, greatly exaggerating the size of it. Standard fare for any ol' aquarium; enough for little kids to enjoy themselves, but except for circling deep tanks, there wasn't much there. The biggest shark I saw swimming around wasn't even half my arm span. The mammals and penguins were interesting though, very active creatures and prolific swimmers.
The rainforest experience was by far the most interesting and immersive; it was the only thing worthwhile. Be aware the main environment is like a greenhouse; there's cool vents to stand by but it is very warm. You will need to take your time to find some of the animals as many are hard to spot. Birds and other animals will fly and roam freely amidst abundance of plant life.
Talking to staff I badly hoped to get a refund on the Discovery experience, it was a bit deceptive to not get enough info on it that warned of how small or how dedicated it was to little kids. I was tempted to find someone and ask before I purchased but I assumed the ticket price would...
Read moreI really wanted to have a better review but I am deeply saddened by the insect husbandry. While many people come to enjoy the charismatic vertebrate species, the invertebrates were a major reason for my visit. Moody Gardens recently opened an insect exhibit and I don’t foresee it lasting long with how they’re currently being cared for. First and foremost, the Jungle Nymphs (Heteropteryx dilatata) were in enclosures that were entirely too small. These beautiful insects live for OVER two years.. their lives will be grossly a shortened by the stress that will be induced by overcrowding and lack of climbing space in their enclosure. Next, the Phyllium species they had was MISIDENTIFIED.. they listed “Phyllium giganteum” when, in fact, it was Phyphillipinicum. Why does the matter? They have different food plant preferences!. The female insect was not on the plant (a sign of not liking the plant) and also had clearly not eaten much of the plant. The food plant they had in there was a type of Photinia.. much too tough for them. Moreover, the male was DEAD. I’m guessing a combination of the wrong food plant and the lack of ventilation probably lead to the death of the mate for that female. I tried to find someone to ask about this and I couldn’t find anyone who knew who was responsible for the husbandry of these beautiful creatures. They’re not “just bugs”; please fix this before anymore die. I will follow up...
Read moreI recently visited the Rainforest Pyramid, and it was a disappointing experience, especially considering the high ticket price. To start, I had a mammal poop on me, and to make matters worse, the staff had nothing to clean it up. The smell was awful, like a homeless person had diarrhea behind a dumpster. It was really unpleasant. I was left feeling completely gross, and napkins or paper towels just didn’t cut it. On top of that, the heat inside was unbearable—hotter than a sauna! I was drenched in sweat within minutes of entering, and covered in poop to boot. I want my money back.
Adding to my frustration, the ocean exhibit, which I was looking forward to, wasn’t even in a pyramid! It was in what felt like a poorly lit basement. Also, the distance between different parts of the pyramids was ridiculous, especially in the summer heat. I really wish I had taken the time to read reviews before visiting. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this place, especially for older visitors. It’s definitely not worth the effort or the price tag. Save your money and find a better...
