Great Experience!!
What a great idea to take a drive up the mountain to Lookout Mountain Park. During a trip to Golden, Colorado earlier this year I had a rare afternoon off and decided to check it out. Besides the amazing views, you'll find Buffalo Bills' Grave and Museum, the Pashaka Gift Shop, trails and yes the views. The 'Lookout' itself has a large area where you can see Denver and Golden and on a clear day, you can see miles and miles out to the surrounding areas and mountains. Be careful driving up the mountain and as I saw a couple of wrecks and abandoned cars along the way. The morning was overcast so many parts of the mountain round were still covered in ice, from the sides of the mountain that didn't get any sun in the morning. It was winter and the weather can change at any time like any other snow-covered mountain. Take your time driving the road. There is a couple of pull-offs on the road up to Lookout Mountain if you have to stop.
As you get closer to the parking area, there are signs to clearly identify where you are and where to park. The same parking lot for the 'Lookout' is the same parking lot for Buffalo Bill's Grave, the Museum, the gift shop and the Lookout area. In the winter most of the trails are covered in snow and not accessible, I did see a few people coming from the trails. You will also see several TV and radio towers nearby.
Luckily it was a clear day, and sunny when I arrived. I checked out all the sites and walked the perimeter of the lookout and spent a good amount of time there looking at the surrounding area. It is serene and picturesque so bring a good camera, if you have one. With everything to do up there even on a wintery day, you could spend a few hours up there. The Lookout Mountain is a great way to spend an afternoon. If you're ever in Golden put this on your list of things to do, you will not be...
Read moreNice place to enjoy the view of downtown Denver and the cities surrounding, Golden and Red Rocks are spectacular from here! There’s not much traffic, parking it’s limited you might have to wait a little bit until someone leaves, won’t be long! You could walk the trail behind the parking lot just for a bit, it’s of medium difficulty, and visit the museum, Búfalo Bill’s grave on the right of the parking lot, and visit the gift shop were you can find Mount Evans and Colorado souvenirs too. Clothing in the store seem kind of dated and expensive, but there’s so many things that you’ll have plenty to choose from. There’s car shows there sometimes, reason why parking could be limited for a bit. There’s two roads, one from Golden that’s treacherous with plenty of curves and the other entrance it is from I70, in both you could find cyclists that could delay your drive but be safe, keep distance from them and wait until is safe to pass, they could give you the right of way or there’s a line to pass them. In ocasiones people gets short of breath because of the altitude, tourists or people not used to, try to take breaks if you are on the trails and keep yourselves hydrated, even though the altitude might not be noticeable if you have had previous symptoms try to carry a small oxygen canister available in many places, stores and supermarkets. Happy trails on this...
Read moreThere is posted park times (1 hour after sunrise until 1 hour before sunset). There's a bathroom at the entrance. There's covered picnic table area & picnic tables under the trees, over by the bathroom area. There's a sign that shows where the trails lead. I suggest taking a walking stick if you have an stumbling issues bc there are serious jagged lose stones that stick up our of the dirt. There are also many rocks that jut out of the dirt, but are stuck in there deep enough to trip you. A lot. The walking trails are very wide & pet friendly. There's only these wooden frames that keep people on the trail. If you have small kids, I wouldn't suggest going without 1:1 supervision bc they could easily just duck under or between the rails & it's a long drop down. I took my dog & she had fun trying to chase the butterflies. They were all over the place. There were huge information plaques. It was fun trying to find the peaks that were labeled on them. I went on a Saturday & frankly it was pretty overrun with people so I didn't have time to read everything. The big groups also made it very loud. I could hear the crows, but no other birds. It was kinda like an outdoor mall. I don't really like people that much, so we only went on the small branch trail that went to Buffalo Bill...
