I recently visited Lookout Mountain just outside of Denver with my 3-year-old, and two friends who brought their 4-year-old and 2-year-old along. It was the perfect spot for a quick, family-friendly adventure! The drive up was scenic and only took about 30 minutes from downtown Denver, making it an easy outing with little ones.
Once we arrived, the views were absolutely stunning—panoramic vistas of Denver, the Rocky Mountains, and the plains stretched out before us. The kids were amazed by the view and loved pointing out all the "tiny" buildings below. We found some short, easy hiking trails that were perfect for our toddlers. The paths were wide, smooth, and had gentle inclines, making them manageable for little legs and even strollers, which was a lifesaver for the 2-year-old when he got tired.
We also stopped by the Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite, which added a fun and educational element to our trip. The kids enjoyed running around and exploring the area, and the museum was an interesting bonus for the adults. There are plenty of lookout points and picnic areas, so we took our time and enjoyed a snack while soaking in the beautiful scenery.
Parking was pretty straightforward, though I’d recommend going early, especially on weekends. Overall, Lookout Mountain was an awesome, toddler-friendly destination that offered just the right mix of adventure and ease. It’s a perfect way to enjoy Colorado’s natural beauty without straying too far from the city. We’ll...
Read moreUsed to like coming here for day hikes until I went on the 4th of july this year and received a $100 citation for trespassing. Some signs were posted for wildlife and trail restoration, so we took an alternative route on a beaten path which led to a beautiful lookout over the city where we planned to watch the fireworks. Well shortly after the park rangers retrieved us and informed us that we were trespassing. We were very cooperative and had nothing illegal on us, so I thought we would receive a warning and be let on our way. Well they decided to give us citations instead, which was for $100 each. There are various other offenses you can make in this park such as smoking marijuana, using fireworks, and drinking alcohol, which none of us were doing. However, the park was littered with patrons doing all of the above right next to us while we received our citations. none of the other patrons mentioned were given citations, a gentleman smoking a joint walked up to us while were awaiting our fate and asked us what happened, he was not cited for using marijuana in the park. He then walked away and lit some sparklers with his friends as they clinked their beers together. Happy fourth. Thank you "ranger" Poos-Benson for the citation. Keep doing a grand ol' job protecting the park from broke college students looking to have a good time. No view you get at this park...
Read moreThe views from here are stunning! From the parking lot, it's just a short walk to various scenic lookouts where you can see downtown Denver and its sprawling suburbs and the majestic Rocky Mountains. It's free to visit, and parking is free too. Best of all, it's only a half hour drive from downtown Denver.
While you're here, be sure to swing by Buffalo Bill's museum and grave. In case you're not familiar, Buffalo Bill is a famed figure of the American Wild West who captivated audiences with his cowboy shows. Even if the Wild West is not your thing, you'll still learn fascinating things about him and the issues of the day (this was a time when America's westward expansion was in full swing).
There is a small admission fee for the museum, but his grave is free to visit. There is also a gift shop and restaurant in a separate building, right next to the museum. I don't personally recommend the restaurant because of the quality of food and service, but it's there if you get...
