Sugarfield Spirits — Attraction in Gonzales

Update: Visited Sugarfield Spirits with some friends, and it was a very nice experience. The environment is relaxed and welcoming. Inside, you’ll find metal backless bar stools and tables; outside, there are picnic tables under warm Edison-bulb lighting — perfect for mingling. The space works well for both small gatherings and larger groups. There’s plenty of parking, including van-accessible handicap spots.

My friends mentioned that the last time they visited, the place was packed, but during my visits it’s been much more laid-back. On this trip, there were eight of us, a few other small groups, and some couples enjoying date night. Hopefully, no one minded our laughter and excitement!

We also had an enlightening conversation with the bartender, Ms. Sarah, about her work experience. As a Google Local Guide and community member, I truly appreciate hearing about employers who treat their people well. From her account, Sugarfield Spirits takes care of its employees — she feels respected, appropriately paid, and genuinely happy there. We left a tip well-deserved for her friendly service. Family was in town for the holidays from across the country and we were looking forward to checking this place out. My mom had emailed with the owner and confirmed our arrival. We planned our entire day around this and drove 45 minutes to this distillery. We arrived and the other owner (who happens to be the brother of the guy we were confirming our visit with) would not let us in and he had a “meeting” even though we could see kids running around and other people inside hanging out. The google hours were not updated either so it appeared to be open. The worst part has been circling back with the owner we originally coordinated with and he has been unhelpful, unresponsive and not accommodating at all. These guys are passionate about what they do. We did a tasting with one of the owners, Andrew, and had an incredible experience. He tailored the tasting based on what we like and even gave us a few rare pours. We also took a tour and had a smoked gin old fashioned (AMAZING). Glencairn glasses are included with the tasting, and they are the perfect glasses for opening up your favorite bourbon.
