Amazing place! I heard about GVC on FB while looking for adaptive activities for my 3 boys, dx w/autism & related disorders. It's just me & the boys so I'm always looking for fun activities that push them. Sensory regulation is difficult w/autism. This place has helped my boys while they are there & staying active. My 13 yr old w/severe autism finally got his piggy's off the ground last night! He didn't do his typical repetitive behaviors while he was in the lift. 3 times & he's pushing himself an inch each time!
We've gone 3 times. Each time was during adaptive climbing night.(once a month) A really AMAZING group of volunteers are there that night. 😊 They are SOOOO laid back, skilled, & friendly! They assist w/climbing while providing an abundance of helpful & positive feedback. They are so, so patient & offer my boys so much insight & tips, but are also knowledgeable. My 10 & 14 yr old climb to the top of the wall while a volunteer assists. I wouldn't know how to do ANY of this if it weren't for the volunteers. I've never climbed(not since the trees in my front yard as a child 😆) I have to learn now bcuz we must start going more often! My boys absolutely love this place! The staff is super friendly. The girls are always welcoming & friendly too. They have a fitness area upstairs as well! I'm seriously hoping to get a family/monthly type membership if I can swing it. 🙏 It's a priority. I see something in my children that just makes me smile ear to ear when we are here! I don't see that often while participating in activities. & I'm trying to teach & show them as much as I can. All 3 boys have taken so much joy, experiences, & have pushed themselves outside of their shells here. They have different plans for climbing. Idk if Equipment is included in pass or membership. GVC offers punch passes too.(Volunteer told me of these) I wish insurance covered climbing based on its therapeutic benefits & how it helps activate the body. Let's face it, we all get overstimulated & need an outlet. We all need focus on this distracting world. & We all need exercise & stretching. This place helps w/mobility & strength. There's also so much teamwork when you look around. People are smiling, laughing, & supporting each other! I can't wait until I can start bringing my boys more often. I think everyone could benefit a lot from...
Read moreClimbing is great here, but staff's service is absolutely terrible. Been to a few different gyms and grand valley by far has the most difficult staff to contact by phone, email, or in person. When trying to end my pass I could not get a hold of them by phone for an entire week. No one ever answered or returned my calls after leaving multiple messages. I also emailed them with no response, which would not be the first time I have attempted to email them about questions. Not one time have I ever received an email back with an answer. When I finally had to go in and ask them why they have not answered any of my calls or emails and their response was, well you have to come in and sign a form in order for us to cancel your membership. So basically, they will only help you if you are there, at their desk, forcing them to help you. When I got injuried at their gym bouldering. Staff never came over to help as I was bleeding, though I was sitting right next to the front desk, thankfully getting help from the person I came with. Ended up needing 6 stitches. Staff was too busy talking to each other to even notice someone was injuried and bleeding down their face. I emailed them to let them know that they needed to do something about making sure climbers are safe and never received any response that they would work on training staff better or even an apology. When we first joined, we were also promised many different benefits for being a member and as time has gone on the benefits have dwindled, but prices have gone up. Great climbing, terrible service, higher prices with less benefits as you continue to be members. I am glad that we are moving back to where I know there is great climbing gyms with also equally great service, and significantly more benefits for being a member. I hope that this gym can get their act together so that they don't end up closed like...
Read moreWe have been members at this gym for about a year and a half. My husband and I go 3-4 times each week to climb. I work for the school district and was given a small discount for this.
The gym got rid of the couples membership and the school district discount and, with ZERO warning, they charged my automatic account WITHOUT informing me of any price increase or any time to CANCEL because it is too expensive. Our account was charged way more money than ever before.
On top of this, one of the employees told me that the owner says that the school district never even had a discount which is not true, considering they have my ID badge on file in order to get the discount in the first place (which is now a safety concern in my eyes). I have an issue with this because the gym posted signs mid-summer staring that all teachers, students, and anyone with discounts must show the front desk their ID badge from the organization that receives the discount... so it obviously existed and the owner knew about it, contrary to what he is now telling his employees to tell the gym members.
All in all, it would be nice if the gym would inform me if they will be taking extra money from my bank account. This is a slap in the face. As a loyal member, this proves to me that the owner does not care for his members, their loyalty, and the community, but he rather is only concerned with the money. We deserve at least a warning to random price increases.
*edited because I have searched for the email. I have an email from each month, nothing stating anything about a price change. The only thing remotely related to anything about the couples membership rate is from December 1, 2019 in which it is stated that you must be married to get this rate (we...
